But Lorna's possibilities aren't limited strictly to the physical or molecular, and there are areas that can be explored without slipping into psychic territory either.

The key in all this is electromagnetism. What it's used for. Where it shows up. Following the research and applications of that would extend to what Lorna can do. Is all I'll say at the moment.
I don't know why people here are saying that Polaris power is the same as telekinesis which it is not.

Magnetism is completely different from telekinesis. Magnetism only affects metals and not other objects. Magnetism can create protective force fields and negate the gravimetric force which telekinesis can't.

That's like saying Scott and Sunfire have similar powers because both have 'firepower' to destroy and burn but they work on different energies.

Whereas, Synch and Rogue's original power is the same which is to duplicate other people's powers. Rogue strength and flight were stolen from Ms Marvel aka Carol Danvers and are not her original powers.

Rogue can do much more than Synch which is to knock out an opponent by touching him/her.

Rogue doesn't just duplicate powers. She absorbs powers, skills, memories, even life force

Diversity of personalities and viewpoints I have long believed matters vastly more then diversity of combat skill sets for an effective book. Is there a wide set of views on a book so that conflict results organically? Do characters by their presence with one another add spice to a book or not?

That is the more relevant question for the new title.

I don't know all of how Synch and Rogue function, but there's what Killerbee911 pointed out on the prior page of how their powers differ and can be used differently. And as has been said with other posts already, both for Polaris and Jean and now Synch and Rogue, even if we thought one character "could do everything the other can only more," it really must be stressed that these are different characters. They think differently, they use their powers differently. Synch and Rogue being on the same team is absolutely fine and brings a lot of opportunities for both. And finally, failing everything else, there's the "holy ****, two cakes" of it all, only here both cakes are excellent in their own ways. It's not like anyone in-universe is gonna say they wish the team showing up to stop an invasion had one less person fighting to stop it.

It's not about personality or else we can just do a human (non-mutant) team book about personality.

The strongest X-team must be a team where there are different powers to meet different challenges.

In the old days of New Mutants and X-Men, each of the members have completely different diverse powers to complement each other. There were no overlapping of powers

    First batch
    Scott - fire power
    Jean - telekinesis/telepathy
    Iceman - ice power
    Beast - strength & agility
    Angel - flight

    Second batch
    Storm - weather manipulation
    Nightcrawler - teleporter
Wolverine - claws, sense of an animal, recuperative power
    Banshee - sonic screams
    Colossus - strength

    New Mutants
    Magik - teleportation
Karma - psychic possession & telepath
    Cannonball - flight
    Sunspot - strength
Mirage - project other people's fears (morphed to stun people with fear arrows?)
    Wolfsbane - animal keen sense
    Cypher - language ability
    Magma - fire power

No problem! It seems weird to me for people to forget how common this is.

I personally think that X-men are wide enough group that they don't have to duplicate powers but clearly Rogue is Duggan favorite which is she is on the team. I am not tripping I know they can be used differently enough I mean Rogue is more of long term power absorber and Synch is more of short term power mimic. Rogue presents more of an opportunity to keep unique fun power around Rogue could absorb Tempo abilities and keep around for couple issues. Synch is more about using powers mimic for one big moment and moving on.

What I have always love about Rogues powers is that she can negate/weaken a person powers, knock out a person with her touch or even use it as death touch. Rogue is also underrated information resource she can absorb memories and skills as well. The thing people view as weak point I have always view as strength. I have talk about Synch ability to track mutants, The other thing Synch is useful for would be gauging the power level of characters and quick analysis of their power. They both have things they can do as the side effect of their powers.
Nice post! I agree that unfortunately some people are being biased and using it as justification for an argument that doesn't really work IMO.

Heck, I would appreciate more Kyost X-Force style teams because I want to see the gritty details and differences of abilities nailed down by writers.

A primarily telepathic team (ie Jean, Emma, Monet, Psylocke, Captain Britian, Sage, etc..) would be tons of fun. Not only because telepaths are really an umbrella term for a host of psionic abilities that each character could hold unique specializations or strengths in (communication, mind-control, illusion-making, astral form combat, weapon making) but also that even if you consider that for example Kwannon and Betsy share similar powers, their personalities and history will eventually shape how they choose to express those powers. Even a relatively simplist power like super-strength, could be expressed differently through fighting style, like a character like Colossus could choose to focus on grappling and subduing while someone like Rogue could choose fast strikes enhanced by her flight and speed.

I think you can be just as or if not more creative with overlapping powers then with completely distinct abilities.

I mean there are plenty of action books and movies with "normal" humans that express their strengths differently with differences in combat styles, intelligence, choices in weaponry, etc... mutants can be the same.

And while those are definitely iconic teams the 60s team was not very popular, ANAD didn't last long enough, and the New Mutants have always been underrated. The most popular teams such as the Outback and 90s teams did have overlap. Rogue and Colossus both have superstrength, Dazzler and Havok both shot energy beams while the 90s team had Jubilee and Cyclops and Rogue and Beast. And if you look outside of X-Men, there are plenty of teams with power overlap. Heck, many, many Justice League incarnations usually has at least 3 characters who have combinations of flight, superstrength and superspeed (Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter).

Comic book lineups used to take power types into account, so teams would have slots to fill, but overlap could still happen depending on how you set your criteria.

It does not really matter though since writers don't really bother telling stories that rely on those power roles and even if they fall back on those stereotypes they are rather inconsistent with it. Flip through any modern comic book and powers don't define how someone is used on a team, it just colors the way the writer absolutely breaks those powers to have them go uber-omega every issue in a flurry of power signature porn.

Since the election is over, i was wondering if we could decide on some other votes with the remaining nine candidates?

So how about determining which of them would be the last one standing if they decide to have a big pub crawl to celebrate the election results?
