Probably needs a good writer to bring out his potential. Here's hoping 2021 will be a better year...

^^^damn, both those pics are sweet!

I like how Penguin is so versatile.
He can operate as both a straight up villain, or a shrewd businessman. He’s part of one of Gotham’s 5 founding families. He’s in the know on most of the criminal activities going on in the city, so, an information broker. So much stuff to play w. there.

This art by Timm reminds me of Burgess.

Oswald is my favorite bat baddie. The gentleman of crime who is an intelligent criminal who can match wits with Batman himself. He’s not crazy, like a good chunk of Batman’s rogues.

The Penguin is one of my favorite Batman villains of all time for his mix of sophistication and ruthlessness, his brilliant intellect and his iconic visual appearance.

It's just too bad that DC is really just content to make him a boring casino owner in most of his modern appearances and it also really annoys me when fans underrate him in favor of overrated villains like Black Mask or Hush. Gotham the show may have been far from perfect but it at least gave Oswald Cobblepot his due as a villain.

Back in the days when i was a little kid, i always saw Penguin being Batman's second archest foe considering how great of a villain he is against Batman. You genuinly want Batman to take down the guy comepletely but Penguin would always be back. But nowadays he is not appearing as much as he used to be while the likes of Black Mask is being pushed more.

May Pengy have a good year. I quite liked his appearances in Tynion's Dark Designs arc in 2020 even if I didn't like the arc itself.

I've been thinking about Gotham Penguin, who is SUCH a fan favorite, and if there's anything unique from that characterization that could potentially be written into comics Penguin to make him more popular. One of Gotham Penguin's greatest appeals is that he's such an underdog; you can't help but root for him. Classic Oswald, though he's got some of that underdog backstory, was nevertheless born into an incredibly wealthy and influential family, whereas Gotham Penguin was raised in relative poverty by his single immigrant mother. When he finally learns that he DOES come from a wealthy family, he's bullied by his stepfamily not only for being 'different', but also for being a bastard son with a lower-class mother.

I don't think it would be too difficult to incorporate at least some aspect of this into Oswald's current comics backstory. You wouldn't even need to change canon that much. Keep everything we see in 'Penguin: Pain and Prejudice', but with the added detail that his older siblings are half-siblings from his father's earlier legitimate marriage, while Oswald's mother was originally a poor immigrant who worked as a servant in the Cobblepot household. Penguin's story has ALWAYS been about him struggling not to be seen as an outsider in high society, so I think making him a bastard and/or making his mother lower-class are both pretty logical directions to take with him.

Pre Crisis PENGUIN was finally given an origin story in Best of DC #10 Digest Secret Origins of Super Villains.
Here is the Splash page from that story.

I think the problem people have with Penguin is that he doesn't have a "menacing" visual or personality. Which is why people have thought they had to "update" him, whether it be Burton's monster man or the ruthless brute in the Arkham games. However, just looking at his original appearance, his goofy looking design and eloquent and polite speech made people underestimate him, which is the point that often gets missed.

I often wonder if the Iceberg Lounge hurt the character rather than helped him, as he pretty much became a simple informant rather than a brilliant yet eccentric criminal.

Infantino cover to BATMAN #169 has always been a favorite.
