    Default Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman Appreciation

Sometimes the pre-Perez incarnations are underlooked. The golden age Wonder Woman was so much fun. She had a good spirit about her, and she seemed quite effective at her job. I also appreciate Wonder Woman's classic supporting cast of Steve, Etta, General Darnell. Such great villains as well, the Baroness Paula von Gunther, Dr. Psycho. I've always thought Wondy had the most educated rogue's gallery throughout the years because many of them are doctors!

The Silver Age, had a similar tone but it was it was a bit watered down and seemed aimed at a slightly younger audience perhaps? Love Andru's art, especially during the later part of his run as artist and Golden Age villains were reintroduced.

Gerry Conway wrote some good Wonder Woman stories as well, love those Jose Garcia-Lopez covers of that era. I also thought Roy Thomas did a fine job of soft-rebooting Wondy's world with re-introducing Steve, Etta and returning Di to Washington DC. Dan Mishkin did solid stuff as well. The early 80s had a solid balance of heroics without too much mythology oversaturation, which was one reason why Perez's reboot wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

Yes, I really love the Golden Age comics. They're dated as hell, but they are still some of the most interesting comics I ever read. I think that out of the Trinity, Wondy has the best Golden Age run. After Marston's death, sadly, the other two eclipsed her because most of her Silver and Bronze Age comics were pretty crap. The only good things to come out of them are Donna, Dr. Cyber, the Swan and Angle Man, and even then their stories weren't the best.

I cannot wait for Morrison's Earth One. It seems like it will be the closest approximation to Marston's vision that we will ever get, even if he deconstructs some elements of it. Perez largely ignored them altogether, and made Diana too much of a Purity Sue. I love his run, but his foundation wasn't solid enough for subsequent writers to really build off of, and that's why the majority of her post-Crisis runs suck almost as much as the Silver/Bronze age ones.
