Where's Elongated Man? I would have liked to have voted for him rather than Plastic Man. Nothing against Plastic Man. I like him too. I just don't like that he's supplanted Ralph Dibny as DC's stretchy guy.

I understand that Plastic Man's more popular, so he gets more appearances. Okay, cool. But I'd rather see him in a founding JLA poll than Plas, who wasn't a member of the original team even though he made an appearance in JLA 144. Mostly, I just miss EM being a regular member.

Still, this is a creative list to choose from. Well done, Major.

I'm pleased to say that so far, nobody has voted for Triumph. Knock on wood!

I voted for Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Black Canary, J'onn J'onzz, Aquaman, and Cyborg.

Cyborg was iffy but I decided to give the seventh place slot to him.

I kinda wanted to include Cyborg, but I'll never be able to see him as a League founder. I also can't imagine that Bruce would join the League right away. Keep taps on them, sure, but he wouldn't fight with them.

I went with five of the classic seven:
Barry, Hal, Diana, Arthur and Clark.

I could be persuaded to swap out J'onn for Clark. Just couldn't see them both and I'm a Superman fan.

Picked Robotman as someone that fit with the team and I prefer Robert Crane to Cliff so bonus points for me to use him.

Bruce is just too many problems. His characterization since at least the late 90's if not al the way back to 1986 (outside of his own title). Then being the sole non-powered guy on the team which requires making him "Batgod" or "first casualty against anyone with decent powers"

Eliminated Vigilante and Ollie for the same "too street level" reasoning. Wasn't thinking about the Canary Cry when i lumped Dinah in with those two, but she always seemed more street level martial artist than planetary defender.

Cyborg seems better as a Titan "founder" than a JL one.

    Plas just seems too silly.

And call me a speciesist but Rex is a dog. If he's on the team then Wing (an actual human being) has to count as an official member of the SEVEN Soldiers ... and that just messes up the math there. So no non-humnoids.

Unfortunately that left Triumph as the 7th member. Can I get Snapper Carr instead?

    No.

Polls here are limited to fifteen options. I chose Green Arrow as one because he still had a feature appearing in World's Finest Comics when the Justice League of America was formed, making him a significant Golden Age superhero still having new stories published then not included in the original line-up.

That left four other slots that I could fill for options, and they came from that story in Justice League of America #144. Snapper Carr didn't seem significant enough to include, and while he may have been in that very first Justice League of America story (The Brave and the Bold #28), he wasn't a part of the founding of the League.

When Schwartz put together the League, Mort Weisinger and Jack Schiff were not comfortable with letting him have Superman and Batman--they felt that was too much exposure for their characters (who were already sharing adventures in WORLD'S FINEST COMICS). And that's why in the early issues, the Action Ace and the Gotham Gangbuster don't have much to do and don't appear on covers. So I could see a world where Mort and Jack won out and didn't let Supes and Bats join the League.

That leaves open two spots. From what was available in 1959, I would guess Green Arrow would have taken Batman's place (Batman with a Bow) and for Superman maybe Supergirl. Those two characters would still need Jack and Mort's blessing (G.A. was in Jack's WORLD'S FINEST COMICS and Supergirl was in Mort's ACTION COMICS)--but they were okay with letting Aquaman and Martian Manhunter join the League. Having Supergirl in the J.L. of A. would have increased the estrogen on the team and given Snapper Carr another lady to ogle (and one close to his own age).

But since Supergirl had first appeared in Action Comics #252 (May 1959) and the first appearance of the JLA was in The Brave and the Bold #28 (February-March 1960), that probably would have been a bit too soon to add her to the role call.

I don’t care about any others as long as Rex the Wonder Dog is on the team.

At the moment, "Rex the Wonder Dog" has more votes than The Vigilante (Greg Sanders) and Triumph (William MacIntyre), and he's only one vote behind Cyborg (Victor Stone).
