Ah, yes, the story of Chumpy, sidekick to heroes, teacher of archmages, frequent visitor to the underworld, beloved of the Jumi, a man with a barrel in his soul, colorful gardener, and professional handyman.

I personally love this game, simply due to the sheer amount of background items tying everything together. For example, that junkyard? That's a mass grave of golems from a big war a while back. The general in charge of them? Pokiehl the Poet, one of the 7 Sages. Then there is the fact that it really feels like you are piecing together the remains of a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting. And if a character dies in story? You can run over to the Underworld and visit them!

I also found it very pretty to look at, the characters tended to have a lot of charm, the occasional absurd questlines (blue jiggly and green wiggly, to say nothing of the centaur's 'romance'), and the phenomenal music.

The down side is that the original version was so.... opaque, that it was easy to miss out on things during a playthrough. How to get magic coins, make better magic equipment, how and when placing locations down effect what is in them (it's entirely possible to lose access to the end-game shops due to placing things too close to home), planting fruit, making your own golems, how to trigger the next step in certain quests (and a few quests where you only got one try to succeed - like the travelling entertainers or the one with the pirates in the caves), and the utter madness that was the crafting system.

Oh, God, the crafting system.... still, that 2-handed wooden hammer with maxed attack made running about with BlackPearl worth it.

Here's hoping they let you reset the map, at least.

    Sincerely,

    Melchior, the Geddon Knight
