Itchy and Scratchy has always been screwed up, and it hasn't improved with age.

    Yup

Also, there is a female character who is an abuse victim who was brainwashed by the machines aka the bad guys. When it comes out she almost led them into a trap the show heavily implies that women are all naturally "weak-willed". Although it is stated by the heroes that the digital prison she was placed in for years by the machines is a "living death" and that "anyone would do anything to be free of it" (paraphrasing) the heroes never once consider Stockholm syndrome nor cut her any slack.

How about rock odyssey? A rare hanna barbera film released only once in theatres and never on vhs in america. (it did air overseas on cartoon network and boomerang)

Pretty much disneys dtv with a story of a girl looking for a boyfriend that goes from the eras. Pretty dark stuff from deaths to post war depressing!

To tone it down yogi bear, catanooga cats and the jetsons show up for a dream segment for the kids later!

Funny thing is it's not the dark tone keeping it from getting released. It's full of songs from elvis, beatles, bee gees, wham and more! It would cost a huge amount to release it like kidd video and it may never get a american dvd release due to all the songs!

Here is some info on it.

Note it says banned on the title but it's not banned. It's just to expensive to release with the songs.

Any specific anime? Earliest anime I've watched (not counting a few episodes of Astroboy) are from the late 80s, so some examples or recommendations would be appreciated.

Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. Here is a good article about the adult themes -

    https://screenrant.com/reasons-capta...not-kids-show/

Which was technically live-action but had a lot of animated/early CGI elements and was most certainly aimed at children. It was basically RoboCop for kids due to the level of violence and adult themes but received a pass because it involved cyborgs doing these things to robots (and the other way around) rather than cyborgs doing these things to humans.

Ren and Stimpy. I don't know how it managed to get away with most of its material for its time.

Then it got bumped to Turner Network Television, and would share the station with the likes of Striperella (1 season, 2 different art styles, amazed it was on cable TV).
