Why would the rule be changed?

Has the manager from the Rays explained why he didn't walk the bases loaded with one out in the 9th last night?

Its just a very odd rule. Everyone was saying during and after the game how the rule should be changed. Im not sure though.

Either way it helped the sox that night.

I still cant believe the Red sox beat the Rays in 4 games and are now on their way to the ALCS. Crazy season. No one saw this coming. I am excited but not looking too far ahead.

What could you change the rule to?

Some people feel it should be umpire's discretion which base to award as it is with a fan interference play. However, the ground rules for the stadium and players are set and usually don't fall back on umpire's discretion (hence the term ground rule double) because that is usually a can of worms, especially in the post-season. The overall trend in baseball (with replay, proposed electronic strike zones and such) is to reduce things that rely on umpire's discretion, not add to them, so I don't see MLB moving in that direction on this. This was simply a case of a fluke play falling under the ground rules, and the confusion/debate stemmed from fans, players and broadcasters not knowing if it fell under the ground rules, but the umpires handled it cleanly and correctly, knowing the rule and applying it. It was still a gut punch play to be on the receiving end of, but it was no different than a ball hitting the warning track and bouncing out of play un-fielded (which is what it was, just with an extra bounce off of a player who didn't field it).

Exactly this, it's a fair play rule, sure in this particular instance it ended up hurting the Rays in a key situation it doesn't mean the rule is in anyway broken.

Because people don't like it that the rule didn't benefit the Rays.

Which is just short sighted because they could benefit from it themselves sometime down the line, it's a very basic rule that helps create fair play.

Houston whacked the White Sox 10-1 to win their series, will now face Boston for the AL title.

The Rays (and their fans) need to get rid of the insane mess of the set of ground rules that are required because of the dump that is the Trop before they complain about ground rules anywhere else.

And the Braves/Brewers game also produced one of those "the rules say what?!?" things, with Adam Duvall as out even though he wasn't out. Riddle me that, Batman!

I don't have the game on. Was it an interference call?

called him out even though replay clearly showed the ball hit the ground first, and apparently it couldn't be challenged for some stupid reason

    EDIT
BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER, Freeman hits the go ahead homer off Hader and Smith slams the door, Braves onto the NLCS!!!

Braves moving on after an exciting game! Freeman is awesome. Got to give it to him.
