Yeah I would honestly say that staying power depends on two big things: 1. DC pushing the character in various mediums and 2. People continuing to read/support said character. Look at a character like Jessica Cruz, literally the 6th Green Lantern Corps member from earth when we already had established another new green lantern in Simon Baz. But guess what, DC pushed her in multiple comics, put her in animated movies, cartoons for kids, and apparently now a video game based on said kids cartoon. All it takes is a little backing and fan support and any character could potentially be popular.

For all we know if we support Jace enough he could do well for himself, maybe get an action figure or an animated movie. Whose to say, but I just don't think you can just count a character out, especially when this is only his origin mini-series.

Alright well today is the day, we finally learn what it is that Jace did that caused family strife and also what he was like when he was younger. Basically to sum it up he was a spoiled rich kid, he wasn’t necessarily a bad kid, in fact Ridley doesn’t bring up his criminal past from the old 70’s comics and the Vulture stuff doesn’t even get touched, but his father wasn’t around because of his work which allowed Jace to grow up getting what he wanted like Cars, taking the family jet to parties with his friends and sister, and picking up girls. Basically he was a little jerk who was privileged because of Lucius being high up in the Wayne Corporation. We also see some early divide between Lucius and Tanya with his absence at home as she tries to discipline Jace.

However, it’s also very obvious from his deposition testimony which makes up the text box that he has significantly changed since then, and regretting the person he was as he looks back on his old life. It’s very clear that since the incident he’s been humbled and very much wants to atone for his mistakes, which is an interesting dichotomy from Bruce.

Now onto what it is Jace did, spoilers below of course.

    spoilers:
It’s on his 17th birthday, after striking out with a girl who rightfully told him off, Jace drives off in his car and FaceTimes another girl to hook up, and while he’s not paying attention he hits a guy hard. He then finds that the guy is still alive, bleeding out and ultimately runs off like a scared kid to his father for help. The only thing we don’t truly know as this issue ends is if the person Jace struck survived or not.
    end of spoilers

So yeah given what Jace did and the already arguments/divide amongst the family because of Lucius absence it’s starting to be clear what the issues among the family is, which I’m sure we will see more of that struggle next issue as the Fox’s attempt to clean Jace’s mess up.

Enjoyed this issue. Glad we’re finally getting into what Jace did.
What I didn’t expect was how different his character was as a kid compared to now. Makes me wanna see exactly what path
He took in life after he left. Also I’m reminded of the fact that the Foxes have always been a really wealthy family. I knew they were rich before but felt the Uber wealth came after, but realistically the COO of Wayne Enterprises is gonna be making bank. Interesting that this Batman looks to be driven to take up the mantle through a deep sense of responsibility/ guilt vs vengeance but it’s still early so that Could Change.

So given that we know from the Comixology summaries that spoilers:
Katana shows up to save Jace from the Morrigan, and Jace's mentor tells him to "become a symbol of greater things" do you think Katana is Jace's mentor?
    end of spoilers

That's my assumption, makes sense if we want to see some Batman level moves from Jace and ties him even more into the Batman world.

There was a line somewhere about him going to a military academy, which it now seems like he was sent to as a direct result of what he did.

Luke says he got sent to a military academy in Future State: The Next Batman #1, but Vol says he and Jace were trained at "The Farm" which is a CIA training camp, so... Which is it?

So the next Batman is just a murderer. What a great origin.

Could be both. Luke wouldn't necessarily know about the CIA part.

Yes, because he totally intended to kill the guy. It's not like his entire characterization and reason for becoming Batman is built around his guilt for causing that incident. And it'd be totally coincidental if his origin happened to contrast Bruce Wayne's.

I guess. That'd make it a bunch of mentors, just like Bruce, counting the military academy, the CIA, spoilers:
and his other mentor who's probably Katana

A murderer whose mentor is another murderer. Great origin again.

A murderer is someone who kills in premeditation, Jace accidentally ran a dude over. That's not what being a murderer is, prepunderling!

What an excuse. "It was only an accident" . Consequences be damned. Someone can just accidentally push a nuke button or pull a trigger.

The next Batman is just a guy who spread the pain of loss to others.
