He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: DC comics, in the early 80's before the Filmation series, did have somewhat darker Masters of the Universe comics, where He-Man cursed Skeletor with "May the dark gods burn his evil soul!" and while Cringer was lazy and complaining, his Battle Cat alter-ego stated his eagerness to rend the flesh of his enemies (though was never seen doing so onscreen). Teela described Prince Adam as someone who spends a lot of time 'wenching and carousing'. And Skeletor? Skeletor got in a fight with another wizard and set him on fire in the three-issue mini-series.
So there's precedent for a darker Masters of the Universe than Filmation's rather silly version (the one everyone remembers). A darker reboot could take it to another level, maybe even give darker backstories for Skeletor and Beast-Man, as well as delve deeper into the politics of Eternia.
