Calvin Ellis is KalEl.
Calvin Ellis is KalEl.
You’re the third person who thinks it will be a racebent Clark besides Dispenser and Superlad. I guess I can see the logic, both Val and Calvin have major differences beyond just their race in contrast to Clark. And Clark is connected to the “American Myth” with his roots, the exact kind of thing Coates loves to deconstruct. Plus neither Calvin nor Val have any major solo stuff to draw on as opposed to Clark. But I still am hoping for Calvin.
They named Kal-El specifically as the one they’re doing? I don’t remember that. Coates did post a Donner logo s-shield on his Instagram instead of Calvin/Val’s shields.
Really we just have to wait. If Calvin or Val get a book announced you can take that as confirmation that they’ll be the ones. That they’re going hard on Jon and Clark right now does make me think there’s a chance they’ll be racebending Clark.

I'm okay with Calvin or Val as Superman,
my problem is that I still want to see Clark Kent, and I don't really trust Coates based on his Cap and Panther book.
As far as film goes, he arguably hasn't gotten his due. At least not for a while, they fart one out every few decades to keep the rights and then run from him again. Or shove Batman into the sequel.
Batman has more than gotten his due, yet here we are. I know you would probably be fine with them doing spin offs before establishing a new Bruce Wayne, but they don't feel the need for that (and likely never will). It's unfair to do that for Batman but not Superman.

Unless it’s explicitly confirmed they’re using either the original Joel Shuster and Jerry Siegel character, or the black alternate versions of the character then all we have to go by is conjecture at this point. As I can tell it’s a 50/50 chance they can go in either direction. I’m still leaning towards using Clark since it’s simply more easier to make a movie about that character whose has thousands of stories to draw from at this point. He has the rogues gallery and supporting cast that I suspect the Abrams would want to use again for his interpretation. Then again, I could also see them going with an original black character just to free themselves of the baggage that race-swapping Clark Kent the character comes. It can go either way. We’ll see what they actually do.

I guess I'm morbidly interested in how an Abrams/Coates collaboration ends up because I feel like Abrams will probably have the hardest part of making this film and Coates' material come off as an entertaining spectacle and avoiding the issues that plagued Snyder's films.

One of the many knocks on the Abrams Star Wars was that he basically recycled A New Hope. So he's clearly not opposed to rehashing an existing story, i.e. Clark.
