They were never gonna do it.

Maybe with the dark haired "false" Supergirl of the late 90's. I don't think
she's in current DC comics continuity so they can do whatever with her.
Linda Danvers should've been restored (having been erased in New 52) at the end of Death Metal when the "everything happened" status quo came in. But yeah, she's nowhere to be seen. She probably retired as a superhero just after Kara showed up, as she also hadn't appeared for several years before Flashpoint.

Is it "slain with no other purpose than creating a Mordru Globe" or "slain with no other purpose than killing"?

Because Krem's characterization and motivations change radically depending on which one it is.

Linda will never show up again, none of the Kara stand-ins will. They’re redundant now that the person they were standing in for is back and regained her old popularity as the Supergirl.

Maybe give them a new name and emphasize the flaming angel stuff and it might work.

The idea that no other female characters can wear the 'S' as long as Kara's around is short-sighted and possibly sexist. Kara is far more redundant than a character like Linda since she's just another Kryptonian, and the franchise has more than enough Kryptonians now. Her powers are exactly the same as Superman's. He also already covers the immigrant story. This is a big part of why her series keep getting relaunched and constantly flounder for direction. She's been 'back' nearly 20 years and in that entire time they've failed at showing why she's distinct from Superman. A character like Linda, who has a more unique origin that isn't almost exactly the same as Superman's, who has powers that are not exactly the same as Superman's, who has a supporting cast that is actually distinct and memorable and not populated by people stolen from Superman's supporting cast, is far, far less redundant.

The mythos surrounding Linda is also so weirdly disconnected from Superman's that it's a wonder why she even has an "S" shield at all. Which is a problem for a character called "Supergirl."

It's not that she's a bad character/concept or that her stories don't have any interesting stuff going on. But she's mired in stuff from the 90s (like a connection to Matrix) born from editorial edicts that the company no longer needs and seem convoluted in hindsight compared to "Kryptonian cousin." She'd probably make more sense as a superheroine named "Angel Woman" or whatever and ditch the Superman elements all together. It's not like the rest of the Super mythos is at all impacted by her absence.

Its not like we need Linda to be exactly how she was in the 90s. New writers can easily streamline her background/origin and add one or two additional connections to Superman mythos.

Bringing Linda back could easily be the solution to the problems they've had with Kara the last 20 years. Teaming them up would give the book an instant direction, something Kara's lacked and desperately needs. Many Happy Returns remains the best idea DC has had for Kara in the last 20 years and arguably the best story for her as well. They're already making a 'Batgirls' book and a 'Robins' book, have had two Superboys and now two Supermen operating at the same time. There's no reason they can't launch a 'Supergirls' book, especially when Kara is floundering and has been for a long time.

I feel like Steph and Cass gel better than, say, Kara and Linda would but I guess it would be all in how you execute it.

I think its because that while Babs went through some changes post-COIE, they were relatively minor and she stuck around. Her full history as Batgirl was still in place even if she was Oracle and she was directly tied to Cass and Steph as a mentor.

With the Supergirls, Matrix and Linda have the problem of being full blown replacements for Kara after she was erased from continuity, they aren't direct legacies like Cass and Steph with strong ties to her. So if she's around, their story purpose at least as it was originally conceived no longer works.

Where do things stand on the Danvers'? I always thought they could re-introduce Linda as Kara's step-cousin or something, she could be the niece of her adoptive father. She may not be a Supergirl, but they could still doing something with her and her Angelic stuff.

Oh lord, the previous issue was actually very good, why did they have to follow it up with the worst one so far?

Was very very wordy and I think the narration distracted from the beautiful art at times. That said I cackled at “45 minutes… what a little ****”. Talk your **** Kara.
