Does someone mind PMing me details about this story? I haven’t been able to read since issue #2, and America is one of my faves and I really hate what bits I’ve been picking up on.
"Never assign to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity or ignorance."
"Great stories will always return to their original forms"
"Nobody is more dangerous than he who imagines himself pure in heart; for his purity, by definition, is unassailable." James Baldwin
Basically and very resumed:
spoilers:end of spoilers
America Chavez received a Marvelman kind of retcon: everything she believed to be true it is not: she is not from a parallel universe, their mothers were not superheroines, but human scientists who experimented on several children to save the lives of their daughters, using a source of energy coming from the multiverse for that, in a facility set on an island. That is why they have to work for an evil bussinessman, but later they choose to save all the children and stop the experiment (after they cured their daughters). They tried to escape, but only America could go away. She ended being found by the Ramones, not the punk rock band (no, really people, what with that name, gringos? I'm latin and always thougth than Ramone was an italian name.) The Ramone family adopted her and although she was well treated, she ended walking away from them. Also, all about Utopian Parallel is nothing more than a child invention of the imagination. All of this has been revealed by a girl claiming to be America sister and who is capable of cancel or limit her powers.
And in the last moment of their final clash, America and her sister are going to fight for the lives of the girls who are still trapped in the experimental chambers of the island.
With only one issue to be released and a clash against an enemy capable to match America's powers, we can wonder:
Could she be lying? Yes. Can be this unretcon? Yes. Can all these revelations be undone in the last chapter? Also yes. But that would make all this series a waste of time, right?
It this a retcon made to match something related to the MCU? I don't know. Could be, could be not. But it seems that for a time at least this is going to be the official origin, until it is reset. But I think they made this to erase also the bad taste left by the Rivera series and restart the character from ground zero. It is the best way? Dunno. But even with the retcon, this series has been best narrated than the one from Rivera. At least Vasquez knows who character she is writing and towards who she is selling her.
But if this series is also despised, then I don't know who can write America then.

After reading issue 4 this just went full on cliche for me. So is like America now going to be a mom to all these kids, find them homes. It seems like America may have ended up in the utopian parallel when she teleported and her sister was grabbed but i just feel the utopian parallel a mutli colored amazonian society in the MCU would have been far more beneficial, entertaining, and had more potential than just another cliche "we made you in the lab, nothing special to see here." kind of disappointing. i mean it was written well but i can't stop thinking "cliche as hell" but i guess one issue left so i'm not excited to get it but i will. hopefully there is something surprising in it.
I just feel this made america orgin generic. Left overs from a cap experiment most likely is how it will be realized in live action. Disappointing.

This isn't a bad origin story but we still have the Wiccan connection and Abuela to deal with.
"Cable was right!"
Yeah. THAT is where it gets really "yeah but wait a second!!!"
Was Abuela a hallucination?
Wiccan was the reason America got involved in the Young Avengers in the first place.
So unless Loki had all that Demiurge stuff planted in her mind to coerce her involvement?
Still doesn't explain Abuela etc etc etc. Wild fever dream?
That's a good point. This series may be written better from a technical standpoint, but at least the Rivera series was full of bombastic ideas for America's world-building. Again, I don't think that series was written better, but I'd much prefer the cool multiversal college than what we've gotten here.
Hopefully we eventually get a creative team that really nails what makes America special.

You were Spider-Man then. You and Peter had agreed on it. But he came back right when you started feeling comfortable.
You know what it means when he comes back.

"The Marvel EIC Chair has a certain curse that goes along with it: it tends to drive people insane, and ultimately, out of the business altogether. It is the notorious last stop for many staffers, as once you've sat in The Big Chair, your pariah status is usually locked in." Christopher Priest
It was Gillen who made of America the character everyone likes. Casey created her, but even most MAC fans would recommend to skip her debut mini, Vengeance.
As for Rivera's series, it was bad, but she at least did attempt to expand her backstory and universe. She did tried to explore how life was in the Utopian Parallel and it's history. It was badly executed, convoluted with a lot of holes (and from a personal pet peeve of mine, the erasure of indigenous people from the backatory), but it was still fixable.
What Vazquez is doing is throwing everything away when there was no need to.
Well, either the next writer will just ignore the abuela and never 5to be mentioned again (it happens a lot in comics) or explain her as a hallucination or just an enemy trying to manipulate her. Believe me, there is always a way to explain it, when they care to explain it.
Also, Loki, lying to someone to manipulate her? Would be characteristic of Loki (Yeah, kid Loki, but Loki still). And as it was presented in this series, she always believed her story to be true. Her motivation still intact. Or even new retcons can be added to explain this retcon.
Also it is possible than the next writer will set back on this origin and return to the first one, either explain or ignoring this series. But it would take some time before that. And that without knowing what does the MCU holds for America.

Gillen is the reason America is popping this run takes all her motivation for that run & just blatantly obscures it, I'm all for Rivera's run being a fever dream but she acknowledges the grandmothers existence in issue 2-3 this is just sloppy & messy it won't stick IMO, I bet America will just be like "I know the truth" & then never expounded upon again.
