    Default Good Try SciFi!

They do their best. Good Sci-Fi writers are visionary and occasionally they really forecast cool stuff. But sometimes, they just get it wrong.

I'm rewatching Minority Report. One of its coolest scenes is when precog Agatha steers protagonist-on-the-run Anderton thru a pursuit by his former colleagues in a mall. Malls are pretty much dead, and I don't see them coming back in the 30 years between now and the movie's setting. Still a good film.

Where else did good sci-fi get tomorrow wrong?

All scifi does this. It is near impossible to predict what every day things will dissappear.
What if Covid largely ends or diminishes movie theaters. Would any one writing scifi in 2019 think for one second that a future with movie theaters be outdated so soon.

Every time Tom DeFalco writes the future.

In his Machine Man mini, people were still listening to music from audio tapes (but in quadrophonic instead of stereophonic sound!) and going to video arcades. People who get addicted to gaming are called "vidiots."

The story was set 35 years in the future, in the futuristic world of 2020.

I always get thrown when I'm watching something made in the '70s or '80s and in some futuristic scene somebody's smoking inside of a building. And just about everything in the Schwarzenegger classic "The Running Man" screamed 80s. Still love it (and from a comic fan's perspective, the Stalkers are all like costumed villains with a unique "power"/killing specialty).

Some scifi is commentary on the contemporary world. It is meant to reflect the time period.

Does anybody expect a writer to have a perfect prediction of the future, or know that one, not yet invented technology will alter the world and how it will do so?

Should they all write about a world so unfamiliar to the reader as to be incomprehensible?

This is all about fun, not some assault on writers for failing their Divination Certification.

Another that always got me was 2001: A Space Odyssey. Heywood Floyd travels to the moon via PanAm.

In all the scifi movies, stories and comics, no one predicted in the 2020s we would all be driving cars that look like a '42 Ford.
