Because it was easy drama, even if for the moment. A lot of choices and events could be labeled as "insignificant" in the long run from one perspective, but the thing is, the significance lies in the moment. Based on what I gather from King's style, the at-the-moment significance and surprise and shock value/etc. is something that he loves to do for the sake of gravitas and drama for the characters he cares for/stars in what he is writing (Batman/Bruce and Selina Kyle/Catwoman in his Batman run).

Nightwing getting shot didn't mean he had to get amnesia. Heck, I don't even recall King's story ever implying Dick had lost his memory.

So not an amnesia arc, but one with Tim as Nightwing.

Personally, I really couldn't stand the Nightwings, but it's possible that making Tim Nightwing would be even worse. It could have lead to some kind of expectation that one day he would be Nightwing, instead of carving his own niche.
Making a named character Nightwing (Harper, Damian, Tim) is worse because it instantly makes it a legacy title and Robin's graduation identity, stripping another of Dick's identities and forcing him to, well, do Nightwing again with a different name.

It works because it blends Superman and Batman, which is unique to Dick Grayson himself. Moreover, it confirms whoever follows in his steps is basically just an inferior version of Dick. Robin was Dick's identity, but it's also Batman's partner. If you go from Robin to Nightwing, congratulations, you're just a pale imitation. He took the name and made it his own for a reason. No other character can or should do so. None have wore it better and that's partially because they weren't features in World's Finest for forty years establishing the connection to DC's two biggest heroes and building that character history to make the taking and repurposing of that mantle so meaningful.

But Tom King has long since proven continuity and character are secondary to his need to tell a story he has cooked. See: Heroes in Crisis, where he basically had it all written save for the characters he'd use and then just retooled them (not the story, really) to fit his plot. That's pretty piss-poor writing for an IP that is literally following a character. He didn't really care about Dick or the people writing him. He just shot him in the head and had a "wouldn't it be cool if..."

There aren't any that have a better claim to it than Dick does presently. Not Kara, not Chris Kent. No amount of being told "they have a good claim to it" will curb the actual history Dick has with both universes to earn that title. It's his. He was the one who made it special. Let him keep it.

I'm not sure if I should be laughing or crying that a collection called "DC Pride" will mostly be about straight people

I was thinking that too. This couldn't be more tonedeaf.

It's certainly telling that there's not enough material to collect for a whole trade focusing on LGBT+ people.

I don’t know about that. Gotham women alone could provide more than enough.

It seems more like a DC Romance trade than a DC Pride collection.

They have enough material to fill a whole collection on actual LGBT+ characters so I don't think that's the problem.

Yeah, this collection is not really LGBTQ+ focused...

Mysteries of Love in Space: 8 stories - 1 story is about Crush
    New Year's Evil: 10 stories - there's 1 story about Harley & another 1 about Poison Ivy
Young Monsters in Love: 10 stories - 1 story is about Monsieur Mallah & the Brain

It's a cash grab like those BoP themed rereleases of graphic novels with art of the actresses on the cover. If you were hoping for a black Black Canary-- whoops! She's white everywhere inside, but thanks for the money!

Calling this a pride anthology seems intellectually dishonest if I'm being polite.

Yeah, I won't be polite. That's some disingenuous bullshit right there.
