BL and comics fan. 🌈 ----- For those saying BL is "pandering to fujos! Too girly! It's fetishization!!!" --> https://www.fujoshi.info/ (a website with academic resources on Queer Media Studies in Asia and LGBTQIA+ history)
The queer body has been used as a battleground, has been criminalized, ostracized, and many times erased from their own histories. -- Alesha Byrne (University of San Francisco)
"Make a new character!" is just like a way of deflecting the issue and trying not to sound like a total homophobe - usually. As we all know, there are extremely few new characters post Crisis (sadly) who catch on, and the problem with new characters usually is that once their creator is done with them, they fade away most of the time. Would love new characters too, but often that's just a dog whistle in this context.
The Jon chatter lately is somewhat amusing (yet dismaying) - it's not even a thing, it's not based in any reality, but people's reactions to it have been really over the top ridiculous.
Um any time an existing character gets changed, in a major way peopel complain... especially if the change is seemingly due to out-of universe reasons.
Welll... also.... what makes you think re-defining an existing character will stick? As we all know, there are extremely few new characters post Crisis (sadly) who catch on, and the problem with new characters usually is that once their creator is done with them, they fade away most of the time. Would love new characters too, but often that's just a dog whistle in this context.
It's more likely for a new character to stick if they do something, well.. new.. and don't just become "Robin #3" or whatever.
The fact it's NOT based on reality makes it worse, because people CAN'T know what's actually going on and need to make up everything. So it's rampant speculation about something people don't like. The Jon chatter lately is somewhat amusing (yet dismaying) - it's not even a thing, it's not based in any reality, but people's reactions to it have been really over the top ridiculous.
People complaining about a character "changing" sexual orientation isn't too different from the negative reactions some people have in real life when someone comes out.
The best part of this Jon chatter is watching Jon’s detractors realize that Jon will never be erased and witnessing the sheer salt
DC will never retcon, kill off, or erase the gay son of Superman
Doing that would sink the entire Superman line and turn him truly irrelevant with no ongoings because of the sheer backlash
There is no universe where DC willingly jumps on that grenade and risk turning Superman into another Martian manhunter…a character that only appears as a co-star with no solo books

I believe Jon as a character can survive beyond this solo title. If it fails, he still has relevance as Superman's son and can be a supporting character, just like many other supporting characters survive without a solo.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Less popular LGBT characters have survived worse setbacks because DC doesn’t want to be seen as homophobic by erasing them
The queer son of Superman…no way of erasing him without destroying careers and turning those comic book writers into pariahs of the industry
Assuming that these writers are suicidal enough to even try
The most reactionary comic book writers would set themselves on fire before taking this job

Do you honestly think that DC is suicidal enough to
1. Even reboot again when new 52 was a sales disaster, with younger Superman himself being the symbol of why it failed?
2. Put themselves in a position to erase a queer character in the era of cancel culture?
Think really hard before answering that question
Because the answer is that no…dc will do the exact same thing they did to Batman’s family and history to a limited extent
Preserve his family as much as possible not to piss off the fans
