Default Marvel and DC crossover events

    Hello everybody,

I just started reading comics again (I picked up a few singles at my LCBS), but I want to dig more at Marvel and DC. I watched Omar's video (Near Mint Condition on Youtube) where he shows all the Marvel's and DC's crossover events which starts on the Contest of Champions and Crisis on Infinite Earths respectively. So I have two questions:

1 - How important are these crossover events to both Marvel and DC comics? Are they essential to understand the whole history of super heroes?

2 - Where do the single omnibus for instance, of each individual super hero fit on the crossover reading list?

    Sorry for the newbie question.

    Thanks.

    Contest and Crisis aren't crossovers.

The actual crossovers are a Spider-Man/Superman story, a Teen Titans/X-Men one, DC vs Marvel/Marvel vs DC, Amalgam Comics, and JLA/Avengers.

If they are not crossovers, what are they?

They are not crossovers between Marvel and DC.

Crisis on the Infinite Earths is a crossover between most of DC's heroes and Contest of Champions is likewise a crossover between all the Marvel heroes.

I think I wasn't clear enough and get you confused. I didn't mean crossover between Marvel and DC, but crossovers inside their own universe.

Neither is important to get an understanding. In fact Crisis will probably be very confusing to a new reader.
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.
