Default The best current writers? Away for a while and need some great ones to follow.

When I started reading comics, writers like Morrison, Ellis, Bendis, Ennis and Brubaker were at the top of their game in mainstream comics. Who are some of the more current writers that you think are writing at a level that will give them the same type of clout as some of these names. I tend to follow creators more than characters and I’ve been away from comics for a while so I’m looking for some great ones to follow.

I have liked a lot of Jeff Lemire’s stuff. Mainly what he’s done outside Marvel & DC, but I did really enjoy his Moon Knight run.

I would say Ewing, Hickman and Lemire. They are Big 3 for me at Marvel right now.
Cates is 50/50, some stuff I enjoy, some is too generic for my taste.

Most say Lemir but other than "Blackhammer", I don't find him that amazing.
    - Greg Rucak (he's been around a while)
    - Joshua Williamson
    - James Tynion IV
    - Gail Simone
    - Jonathan Hickman
    - Phillip Kennedy Johnson
    - Charles Soule
    - Matt Kind
    - John Layman (he's been around a while
    - Al Ewing
    - Chip Zdarsky (he's been around a while)

If you're going to try something:

    - Jonathan Hickman (House of X/Powers of X)
    - Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk)

Other than that, you'll have to go a while back for something from Ellis himself (Karnak) or the best Aaron (THOR: GOD OF THUNDER 1-11).

It depends what you liked about those 5 you listed (to me, they are 5 very different writer) but for me Marvel's current top 5 (not in any particular order) would be Al Ewing, Jed Mckay, Chip Zdarsky, Donny Cates (at least for VENOM and I'm not normally a fan of the character) and Nick Spencer.

I would suggest waiting until the end of April to give Kurt Busiek's MARVELS on-going series which is just about to start a look. I would also like to include Jim Zub who has yet to let me down but I wanted to limit the number to 5 and Zub hasn't done anything for a few months.

If you are a fan of mutants (yes people it is possible to like Avengers AND X-Men) then I would suggest picking up Jonathon Hickman's HOUSE OF X. On the x-side of things Gerry Duggan's MARAUDERS is excellent and so is Hickman's X-MEN.

Just a few things for you to try, I hope I haven't rabbited on to much and it has been of some help...

I actually really like Tynion’s work. Glad he was mentioned. His Detective Comics run was one of the few recent ones I’ve read.

I’ll be checking out Marvels. I’ve read so much Busiek over the years. His Avengers run has received multiple reads as has his Astro City stuff.

Try his "Batman/TMNT I, II, III" - it's getting an omnibus.

    Hickman
    Zdarksy
    Ewing
    Cates

Those are the big four for me. Cates and Hickman especially I can read anything from. Ewing's Guardians is great as well.

Oops, completely forgot about that this morning (I don't read CONAN anyway but it just completely slipped my mind)
