Default John Romita Jr back at Marvel

Romita Jr back at Marvel... ugh, the dude's a has-been. Hated his work on Bendis's Action Comics.

Mixed feelings on this but somewhat optimistic. On the one hand, I didn't enjoy his last run on Action Comics with Bendis one bit. When he's phoning it in AND he's inked by the otherwise great Klaus Janson, his art has an unfinished, sketchy look that makes it quite unappealing to me. When paired with a good colourist and a different inker however, and actually puts the time in, his work is still absolutely beautiful like in Superman: Year One. So I'm curious to see who he's paired with for this new Marvel stint and also what project/s he'll be working on, but as I said I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic.

Yeah, Marvel is in his DNA. I wonder what title he will be working on?

Eh, can't agree with you on Klaus Janson. If anything, I've seen him on other artists and he does give them a sketchy look on their work too.

Lmao good! And if Marvel traded one of their good artists to DC for him all the better

    This.

His style (while not to everyone’s taste) just fits Marvel.

    I’m glad he’s back.

I adore Romita/Janson team-ups. I used to buy Thor purely to see their art.

I liked them together when John used to do full pencils and his art was very detailed, and I generally like Janson both as a penciller and as an inker. But lately (and also on Thor as he was pulling double-duty on that plus Spider-Man) Romita's art seems too sketchy and unfinished and I don't think Janson's inks help with that look. Compare Action Comics with Janson's inks with Superman Year One with Danny Miki, it's like looking at a different artist.

wow. the same ugly moai faces, that same punch-to-the-face action sequence, lines lines straight lines and those unnecessary lines...

is marvel's lack of good artist really that bad these days???

Me too. I'll always love the artwork of JRJR on Thor '98

My only disappointment was with his version of Thanos (especially the headgear). I was hoping it would've been more like the Lim version:

I liked his art in the 80's. Maybe he wanted to move away from being compared to his Dad. I guess Uncanny X-Men is where he debuted his current style, and I didn't care for it even back then.

I think (much like Ron Garney) JRJR is suited to big bold action set pieces. Robots, Hulks, The Thing, Nimrod, Juggy, Colossus are all characters I associate with him (and his work on Eternals).

Bendis and decompressed talk doesnt seem a natural fit for the man.
