I saw someone on another site point out that Marvel makes a big deal out of their female characters while DC is often hung up on acting like their female characters aren't all that. There is no sufficient reason beyond nostalgia for Black Canary to permanently be Green Arrow's love interest or Zatanna being mostly Constantine's ex, Vixen to not have a solo ongoing with all the promotion and fan fare that DC can muster or Kimiyo Hoshi to not be getting any kind of push or Power Girl not being adapted for so long but here we are.
Yeah, a lot of Marvel heroines are somewhat restricted by being in a team. But they do seem to get promoted more than DC ones. I feel they're better known by both the general comic readership and the general movie/tv audiences.

Although I don't think being based off another hero necessarily makes a hero worse

I don't think it's a problem in of itself. I like Lois, Linda, Mera, Hawkgirl and Iris and they wouldn't exist without the main franchise lead but when those types of characters are the only ones to get a lime light then that becomes a problem.

I see what you mean. Although Lois and Iris aren't really the same as Hawkgirl or Supergirl to me. That's like comparing Batman to Steve Trevor

Hey man, one of those guys punches their surrogate son in the mouth to send a message. Batman doesn't win every comparison by default.
