Embarrassingly enough, it was the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever. Bee Gees. Good Lord.
Billy Ray Cyrus. So embarrassing.
"I rhyme with tyre - And cause pollution - I think you'll find - It's the best solution: What Am I?"
"And that's the essential problem with 'Planetary' right there. When Elijah Snow says, 'The world is a strange place'... he gets Dracula, Doc Savage and Godzilla... When we say it, we get The Captain Fire-Cock Rock 'n' Roll Spectacular."
~ Pól Rua
I also got Lion King. I don't mind. Would've preferred Aladdin, but eh...
My older brother graduated in 1967. What a year--all the great albums that came out, the Summer of Love. But I doubt that the grad committee at his school allowed any of that music to be played at the grad dance. Unless it was Andy Williams or Acker Bilk, this was not the sort of music they'd approve. That dirty hippy music was too obscene.
Wow, 50 Cent's "Get Rich or Die Tryin'." Was graduation that long ago?
"I am a man of peace."
"A man of peace...who fights like ten tigers."
I guess it's appropriate (since I'm from NJ) that the #1 album of my graduation year was Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet". Meh.
I also think my copy was a mono recording.
The "record player" (turntable) in my house at that time was one of those units that was in the same console as our family's TV set (we still had a b&w model back then). The record player and speaker was on the left half side while the television set was on the right side of the cabinet.
2003, eh? Same as me. I remember GRoDT's release, it seems like it didn't hit number one here in the Netherlands. The number ones over here were:
'Escapology' by Robbie Williams
'Come Away With Me', by Norah Jones
'Clean Up', by Dutch singer Ilse DeLange
'Birds Of Pray', by Live (yes, the guys who made 'Throwing Copper'; this album doesn't stand up to that one, though)
'Omarm', by Dutch pop-rock band Blof
'25 Jaar', a posthumous compilation from Dutch singer André Hazes
'What If', by Dutch rock band Kane
'Impressed', by Dutch Idol winner Jim Bakkum
'Clones', by the Neptunes
'Oya Lélé', by Belgian girl band K3
and ''n Ons Geluk' by Dutch singer Frans Bauer
not many of these give me that graduation year nostalgia, I gotta admit it. Closest are probably Escapology and Clones.
Take my dreams, childish and weak at the seams
Please don't analyze, please just be there for me
By the list provided, it was Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi.
But here in Australia, it was Whispering Jack by John Farnham which spent a staggering 25 weeks at no. 1.
I do recall a lot of Bon Jovi being played in the common room when I was in Year 12.
Graduated in 1996 so this would be it:
1. 'Jagged Little Pill,' Alanis Morissette (7.4 million units). 2. 'Falling Into You,' Celine Dion (6.1 million). 3. 'Score,' Fugees (4.5 million). 4. 'Tragic Kingdom,' No Doubt (4.4 million). 5. 'Daydream,' Mariah Carey (3.1 million). 6. 'All Eyez On Me,' 2Pac (3 million). 7. 'Load,' Metallica (3 million). 8. 'Secrets,' Toni Braxton (2.9 million). 9. 'The Woman In Me,' Shania Twain (2.8 million). 10. 'What's The Story Morning Glory,' Oasis (2.6 million).
Aside from Metallica while I like their earlier stuff I didn't listen to 'Load' so I don't know whether it's good but the rest are just stinkers, judging by it this was post Grunge and before pop acts like Spice Girls and Britney Spears came along.
