I can only assume some of Aaron’s retcons (Phoenix as Thor’s mom, Howard and Coulson being active servants of Mephisto, Thanos being active thousand of years before his grandfather’s birth etc) will be explained/excised as a result of Mephisto messing with time (culminating in the Heroes Reborn verse)

They won't. The PF is too widely known to be associated with the X-Men/Jean for them to start it with Echo. It would not make any sense for them to do it. Instead this is likely part of the reason why she is getting the PF, aka with her show happening they are trying to boost her presence in the books.

Not sure if it's Mephisto specifically but I figure the return of the Phoenix is to parallel the prehistoric Avengers as pointed out by T'Challa in the latest issue. It's all tied to a specific story Aaron wants to tell and once that's done I don't believe for a second Maya Lopez will remain possessed by the Phoenix.

It’s the same as Storm's story in Black Panther: the X-office will wait until that story is over and then once again integrate the Phoenix with the X-mythos.

Hang on, hasn’t a big portion of the arc being the Phoenix holding the Avengers prisoner and making them fight against each other and others with the implicit threat that if the don’t she’ll either kill them and/or empower doom/Namor/Red widow/Squadron Supreme; with Cap and Panther wondering throughout how their going to get rid of Phoenix

...at this point it should propably only get attached to Howard the Duck. Aaron destroyed the concept and really made it a cosmic sexually transmitted disease out of it.

It is basically mainly a concept to sell more variant covers.
