Definitely in my Top 5 favorite Legionnaires. And I love that they kept his uniform basically the same for several decades (with some exceptions).

Why does he wear a bird symbol?

Well, it's in honor of his mentor, Marla Latham. Now, where Latham picked up the bird costume is another story (that I don't know).

I'm sure it's a retcon, but it's been referred to as a dragon in the past -in the reboot, he ran with a gang called "the Emerald Dragons" which I believe was a reference to the monster ("space whale") that gave him his powers.

Oooh. Strange that the symbol does not look like a dragon nor a whale. It always looked like a bird of some sort to me (?), almost like that and the belt were a male version copy of Wonder Woman's look.

Hi Phoenixx9 I am a big fan of Ultra Boy (Jo Nah) from the Legion of Super Heroes. To answer your question about Ultra Boy's bird symbol, it looks like the Native American Indian symbol of the Thunderbird. I saw a tattoo of his symbol on Ultra Boy's left arm/ shoulder in my favorite series Legion of Super-Heroes: Five Years Later. In my 20's I drew Ultra Boy's symbol and gave it to a tattoo artist to put on my left arm/shoulder. He told me it looks like the Native American Indian symbol Thunderbird which I got the tattoo with black coloring inside it.

    Hi there, mmmmmatrixmikey!

Thank you for all the information. I never saw that issue so this is indeed what it must be. I like the ties to the Native American Indian lore and this is one I once pondered but never knew why it would be tied to them. Of course, I love all things Firebird, Thunderbird, Phoenix, etc, lol.

How did your tattoo turn out? Is it yellow like Ultra Boy's? I would love to see it. Can you show us?

I've LONG considered a tattoo of the UB symbol (sooooo jealous!) but so far just have a take on one of my favorite Dawnstar sketches. I love her but don't think I'll be stopping there...

Also one of my favorites, because he somehow manages to take one of the most iconic and common power combos, the basic 'Superman' flying brick package, and turn it around into something that requires some real tactical use, and with a powerful limitation that can leave him vulnerable all too regularly. It kind of forced him to think (something that, admittedly, he wasn't always the best at, although he's certainly street-smart and competent, in most iterations), rather than just fly head first into everything, confident in his unstoppability.

He's up on my list as well. I liked his relatoively early "bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks" persona which was unusual for Early Silver Age superheroics.

Jo tops my favorite Legionnaire list. Speaking of his chest symbol, I remember as kid trying to replicate the symbol using a magic marker on a white t-shirt
