Default The James Bond Pierce Brosnan Era

What I get in this era was Pierce made a great Bond but did not star in great Bond films, Golden Eye the only great film. Although I personally loved Die Another Day , not just because I am a Halle Berry fan. I thought the film was pretty good

How will you rate the Brosnan era of Bond?

I disagree I think at least 3 out of 4 of brosnan movie's are great campy but still good you might even make the case they are the last true bond movie's.

I'd say Pierce is one of the top 3 Bonds. His series is pretty good and still holds up.

As a huge fan of "Remington Steele" I was thrilled to see him as Bond. I know he had a shot after Moore left, but it was probably good he didn't get the role at the time - I think he looked better as Bond with a few more years under his belt. I agree that "Golden Eye" was probably the best of his era. I liked everything about it. I liked his other ones, but they each had their own pitfalls.... I wasn't crazy about how over the top the ice fortress and satellite death ray were in "Die Another Day" but I liked everything else.(well, the weird race changing aspect to the villain was problematic) "Tomorrow Never Dies" was pretty good, there was nothing terrible about it, but there wasn't anything really special about it either. I liked the villains and the story of "The World is not Enough" but Denise Richards stunk up the joint and was just bad casting.

Goldeneye's fairly dark and wouldn't be out of place with Dalton's era (Possible it was written with Dalton in mind), although Brosnan came across as more likeable than Dalton, who seems to often have a permanent scowl (I think Craig has been able to balance the darker aspects of Bond somewhat better than Dalton did). Funny thing is Brosnan did want to play a more gritty Bond, even backing Quentin Tarantino's Casino Royale idea.

The rest of the films sort of played more to Brosnan's comic timing and more traditional Bond film elements, but sort of turned into Roger Moore 2.0. TWINE tried for a deeper story I think, but was let down by aspects of the production-The action editing was almost as bad as QUANTUM OF SOLACE, and as mentioned, Denise Richards didn't help. Also like the Roger Moore era, a lot of the films were kind of jumping onto things that were popular at the time-TND for instance seems heavily influenced by Hong Kong action films, and DIE ANOTHER DAY used a few tricks from THE MATRIX, FAST AND THE FURIOUS etc.

It's possible they were also aiming more for the teen crowd with the last three films, given how successful the GOLDENEYE video game turned out to be.

Goldeneye and the World is not Enough were good. Tomorrow Never Dies was sketchy. Die Another Day was not great

Denise Richards was the last classic Bond girl.

She was awful. I didn't at all buy her as a nuclear physicist.

Honestly the Craig era is generally the best to me

Pierce is my favourite Bond, however I cannot help but notice his bond movies don't seem to be standing the test of time, apart from 1.

Yeah, compared to Isabella Scorupco in "GoldenEye" who I could totally buy as a programmer. I honestly didn't even think she was going to an important character at first and just there to be "pretty programmer who dies at the beginning" rather than the main (good) "Bond Girl."

Interestingly, "GoldenEye" was directed by Martin Campbell, who also directed Craig's first Bond film "Casino Royale" and um ... of course, "Green Lantern."

Campbell's generally good at spy stuff (Not only Bond but a lot of his other work too) and light-hearted adventure without too many FX (His Zorro films). GL was sort of out of his comfort zone.

I've always liked when the Bond Women were more useful than just "eye candy", so that whole business in tWinE seemed like it was trying to do both and achieving neither

Thing about Scorupco and Fammke back then is that they were relative unknowns at the time too, mostly doing some modeling and a few small acting roles (Although Scorupco also had a singing career too).

Yeoh, Hatcher, Richards and Berry were all pretty well known internationally at the point they did in Bond. Marceau wasn't as familiar and Pike was an unknown but I think they were pretty strong in those films as the evil Bond girls (although both had roughly the same twist, although while Bond still carried a light torch for Elektra even after she was revealed to be evil and seemed sad he had to kill her, he didn't hesitate with Frost given what she put him through).

I really liked Sophie Marceau - one of the rare sympathetic Bond villains. Did anyone else think of her and Renard when seeing Talia and Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises?" I thought they had a similar vibe.
