It wasn't just the Oscars, EVERY major awards show on television tanked in the ratings this year.

Yes, awards shows in general have just declined but the political climate is not helping either.

I remember watching the Grammys years ago and they did a music montage, they had many Gays and other LGBT couples marry. I personally thought that would have harmed their viewership for a long time to come but I dont think they lost as much ratings like the last 3 years. I guess looking back now, that seems very mild compared to the political climate of the last 4 years that has spilled itself to all the awards show,

Speaking of, I saw "News of the World". Excellent movie. I hope it gets nominated. It would be nice to see a movie I watched and liked get a nomination. Ironically, it might normally be a movie I would not have seen except it's Tom Hanks in a western which I had to see.
The point of the Oscars is that people in the film industry vote for their peers. So, how would you get hundreds of actors to nominate something more commercial?

One way to bring me back to watching would be to nominate movies I would actually watch. When the nominations came out I looked over the list and other than the animated movie "Soul", there wasn't a single movie I had any interest in seeing. I'm talking even if they paid me to watch them. It seemed each nominated movie was more depressing than the next. Who the hell wants to watch those movies when we basically lived through one of the worst years in our history already?

I haven't watched the Oscars in years because the movies have been a drag. It strikes me that the more "important" a movie is hyped as, the less I am interested in seeing it. I'd rather see a big dumb popcorn movie that entertains me than some ridiculous "we are so important" type of movie that makes me want to slit my wrists before the movie is even over.

LOL yeah those torture porn movies. Not sure how stuff like that got to be more highly regarded than inspiring movies.

That's the kind of movie the Oscars used to rely on for ratings to draw eyes. Now nobody cares for that kind of film anymore. For young kids these days, Tom Hanks is probably better known for his SNL clips as David S. Pumpkins.

Oscar movies used to gross better back then. Movies like Gladiator for instance earned $400mn worldwide.

I agree with the overall sentiment about this. I mean Get Out or Midsommar not getting nominated or winning major awards is the reason nobody cares about Oscars anymore.

Still I am glad Parasite won in 2019, that was great.
I was all aboard the Parasite train winning. It was one of the few movies during the last 10 years I saw BEFORE the Oscar hype started.

Now that was one I only saw because it was in the news the next day because it did win Best Picture. Couldn't speak to the rest of the field but Parasite was FANTASTIC.

I'm not scared of the dark but to this day I'll go down to my basement and think of those eyes that poor baby saw peek back at him, and, crack up. That would have **** me up too.
Beefing up the old home security, huh?

Oh, I agree. The ratings problem is probably unsolvable. Or they could make it so entertaining that people don't care about the actual nominations.

So true. I remember "Million Dollar Baby", a movie I thought was great but was presented as a female Rocky movie. I was glad I saw it once it was over but I never would have seen it had I realized how unbelievably sad and depressing it was and I have never seen it again and never will.

I simply don't care about most of the self-important, depressing movies in genres that are Oscar bait.

Granted the Oscars have been falling and one could predict they would fall a lot more in this year. But they really fell hard. So it's not something they can just dismiss. I didn't watch but I understand there were a lot of changes--so you can expect next time they'll reverse the polarity.

I specially remember 2005 Oscars with Million Dollar Baby, it was the year Morgan Freeman won finally. I must say this was worth it to watch in 2005. I stayed up late watching it and was late to school in the next day.

So many highlight in 2005 I remember so well. Chris Rock was also a great host, Spiderman 2 won for VFX. Beyoncé performed 3 times. Hilary Swank beat Annette Bening again for best actress, Scorsese was denied Best Director again. this was one of the best years for the Oscars.

And speaking of the woke stuff people are saying the Oscars have turned into. Two African American actors won the acting categories . So that was prove that people of color back then could still win on merit.

Poor Oscars, they don't even remember their own history

Thanks, but since I don't watch horror movies I fail to see how that analogy works for me.

Funny thing...I loved Million Dollar Baby. I didn't feel it was self-important. I might have ended up being a little depressing. But it was part of the story rather than depressing simply so it could be depressing. It was a well told tale.

It's hard to really fully explain what is a good dramatic movie as opposed to a dramatic movie that fails to smell the **** its shoveling.

When I first saw Million Dollar Baby many years ago, once it finished I thought to myself "That was beautiful. I'm NEVER gonna watch this movie again" Not because I had any issues with the artistry behind it, but because it was such a gutpunch.

Then, a couple weeks ago, I re-watched it, and possibly had an even greater experience. It's solid.
