Default movie number one box office gate opening weekend/blockbuster

So, when did the trend of summer blockbusters begin? And when did it evolve to the point where studios cared about getting the top spot opening weekend instead of word of mouth momentum and what has contributed to that? I wonder what movie going was like from the 1920s through 1970s and 80s. Cause back then there was no such thing as a summer event type movie. Greatest Showman was a case where BO started very slow and then it just carried momentum and became a big hit

Jaws was the first summer blockbuster and then the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies solidified it as Hollywood's biggest trend. It's ironic that two buddies of Scorsese are basically responsible for today's movie scape so Marty should call them out instead of yelling towards Feige who is only bringing to perfection what they started for today's demands.

The trend with the emphasis on opening weekends came later though. I guess the internet played a part in that because nowadays you easily get spoiled if you don't see a movie directly when it comes out. Decades ago one could go into The Empire Strikes Back weeks after its opening and still be surprised by the father reveal, nowadays it would be all over the internet right after the opening.
Tolstoy will live forever. Some people do. But that's not enough. It's not the length of a life that matters, just the depth of it. The chances we take. The paths we choose. How we go on when our hearts break. Hearts always break and so we bend with our hearts. And we sway. But in the end what matters is that we loved... and lived.
