Most costumes would look daft wet, dry, wrinkled, or freshly pressed. At least, briefly.

If someone entered close combat in most superhero gear (Batman, especially), they'd quickly go from looking daft to looking dead.

Never mind how they look - think about how they'd work (or prevent the hero from working). Just ask Edna Mode about the capes. Nevertheless, isn't it now part of canon that the Superman costume was designed (by Martha Kent) to make people stare at it rather than at Clark's face, thereby helping preserve his secret identity? OK, maybe it's not part of canon now, but then, what is?

I believe Phoenix Jones was the only real costumed hero in the US that physically fought the bad guys and he looked pretty cool...until he was taken down for being one of the bad guys.
