I really like the fourth world characters and I tried to get into the 1970s series but couldn’t. Are there any other titles worth reading for the fourth world?

I'm in the same boat; really like the characters and concepts, but what little I've read of Kirby's original run wasn't my cup of tea.
Seems a lot of people aren't crazy about it, but the Fourth World stuff that I've enjoyed the most was the material from the 90's, when they had their own little line for a minute. New Gods by Peyer & Pollack, Mister Miracle by Dooley, Takion by... someone . They were some decent books, though nothing amazing.
And while not a Fourth World book proper, Starlin's Cosmic Odyssey dealt heavily with the New Gods as well.
The recent Mister Miracle by Tom King was amazing.
Orion by Walter Simonson is considered a classic by many. I highly recommend it. There were even backup stories featuring work by Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Dave Gibbons, and Howard Chaykin.
Final Crisis was very New Gods heavy.
Personally I was never a fan of Starlin’s take on the Fourth World. I felt Cosmic Odyssey was just ok (made a lot better by the art) and Death of the New Gods was horrible.

Ugh, how'd I forget Simonson's Orion in my list?! Easily the best of that era.
