Well, Christopher Sleeve built his body and trained his muscles when he was hired to play Superman.

They cast a bodybuilder with very little acting experience into the Conan role. Conan was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first leading role. He only starred in one film prior to the Conan movie.

FYI, Frank Thorne, who drew Red Sonja's 1st series for Marvel, passed away just last month. He was 90. RIP.

Not all of the character's appearances in comics have used the Chainmail Bikini design. In her first appearance and in some of the later Dynamite Comics series had the character in a kind of mail shirt. The 80's Marvel series gave her a Xena like tunic.

The character has had a number of different looks.

The usual complaint I see for action-females is that they don't look strong enough, and though I don't usually feel that criticism is valid bearing in mind it's supposed to be a fantasy anyway,

I think it is still important that the fight scenes are not breaking the suspense of disbelieve, but I think that apparat from the build of the actress also the fight choreography plays a role here.
