Default Manhunter. Mark Shaw. An appreciation.

Found some early issues (1, 6-7, 9) and later ones 18-23 going cheap at a back order specialist and read them all in the one evening.

It had its moments. Ostrander was doing some good stuff on Suicide squad then plus writing this book. Shaw had an interesting moral code. He said he was just in it for the money but often found himself being the hero..

It'll be interesting to see what Mark does in the future .

What did you think of this? Anyone got the plastic mask that came with the subscription?

The Jack Kirby version with Shaw's first appearance is the one I have in my collection...

I eagerly await the day Bendis' touch on him is completely washed away, lol.

Whatever happened to his Leviathan stuff, anyways?

I was so happy with the persona of this character in Leviathan, it was one of rare treats of that year. I think it was understated just how important and unusual the events of earth are that when a manhunter, or multiple gl's
show up on one planet and not only are they outshone, but no one really bats an eye.
He has some of the best thoughts in comics I'd seen in forever, and I hope they bring that series back.
My priority is enjoying and supporting stories of timeless heroism and conflict.
    Everything else is irrelevant.

My favorite Mark Shaw Issue. He looked really cool in that armor.

Never seeing where Marc Andreyko was going with his plot for Mark Shaw - combining the mythos of the Order of St Dumas, with the Manhunter villain Dumas, and Mark Shaw seeming to head into the direction of becoming a new AZRAEL - in the Kate Spencer led MANHUNTER volume, is one of the biggest cancellation/reboot letdowns of ALL TIME.

It's interesting how Shaw has kindof become an earth-based Parallax. Hopefully he'll continue to be presented as a morally grey character rather than an outright villain. Or, I'd be okay if he went back to being a Manhunter. (where his stint as Leviathan will still inform the character moving forward)

I loved Ostrander’s writing for him, bust especially the first and last arcs with their Dumas antagonists.

Did the Andreyko series really try and retcon *all* of Dumas’s appearances to being Shaw?
Like action, adventure, rogues, and outlaws? Like anti-heroes, femme fatales, mysteries and thrillers?

I wrote a book with them. Outlaw’s Shadow: A Sherwood Noir. Robin Hood’s evil counterpart, Guy of Gisbourne, is the main character. Feel free to give it a look: https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asi...E2PKBNJFH76GQP

In issue #143, Shaw was using another identity.
