First appearance: G.I. Combat #138 (October - November 1969)



In the story, the crew of the Haunted Tank encounters the four members of what would become the group known as The Losers while rolling along. All four of the initial members of The Losers had previously been featured in other DC war comic books in the past.

Their own feature started running in Our Fighting Forces #123
(January-February 1970) and ran until issue #181 (September-October 1978).
And during 1974-1975, Jack Kirby was in charge of the series!

Am I remembering right that each of the Losers had an individual feature (except Gunner & Sarge, who were always a package deal) that was discontinued before the Losers rolled out? If so, had there ever before been such an attempt to salvage discontinued properties by putting them together in a team?

Yes.

Capt. Storm had eighteen issues of his own self-titled comic book that ran from 1964 until 1967.

Gunner & Sarge's feature started in All-American Men of War #67 (March 1959) and was in two issues before it advanced into Our Fighting Forces #45 (May 1959) where it ran until issue #94 (August 1965).

Johnny Cloud's feature first appeared in All-American Men of War #82 (November-December 1960) until the final issue (#117, cover-dated September-October 1966) but was not in issues #112-114 nor #116.
