    Default Star Wars (1977)

So, just watched this for the first time in a while. It holds up really well still. Really fun adventure movie. It's funny after watching the other shows and prequels how bare bones the lore is in this first outing. In the fight with Vader and Obi-Wan, Obi refers to his old friend "Darth" instead of Anakin. And Darth was the name given to whoever becomes a Sith Lord. Alec Guiness is really great as Kenobi and should have won the Best Actor Oscar that year. That scene where Luke looks out at the setting sun with John Williams score swelling still sends chills. Great movie, all in all.

Yeah, that first one never gets old. So many great scenes and some really great lines.

I think that's because he wasn't intended to be Anakin when that movie came out

What's interesting about this one is how natural the dialogue sounds compared to the clunky stilted dialougue from the prequels

A product of being saved in the edit. The actors involved in the OT actually got a hair up their asses about the critiques of the prequels with the dialogue given that the OT dialogue isn't much better. However you had better directing (Lucas wasn't as involved) and far more experienced actors to make things work. George Lucas is someone who would even likely admit that his passion is more in camera technology and the techniques of film than it is writing. That's not to discredit him or anything but it's pretty clear where his shortcomings as a director are. He also had developed the prequels at a kind of breakneck pace being written as they'd been coming out. Not as bad as something like Jurassic Park 3 but definitely a big reason why the films came out the way they did.

A lot of credit for the dialogue kind of goes to Willard Hyuck and Gloria Katz, who script-doctored a lot of the film (They also wrote American Grafitti, Temple of Doom etc, although they also were involved with two of Lucasfilm's biggest flops, Howard the Duck and Radioland Murders). Brian De Palma also simplified the opening scroll.
