Of course u.f.o.'s are real, because u.f.o. is an abbreviation for unidentified flying object. Every time I go outside, I see objects flying in the air and I'm unable to identify them--so I am seeing unidentified flying objects all the time.
This is the problem with always using abbreviations--you stop thinking what the abbreviation actually stands for. You forget that K.F.C. is fried food and you forget that a u.f.o. is simply not identified as yet. Instead, as soon as people see u.f.o., they think calling occupants of interplanetary craft.
I prefer Occam's razor. Making the leap in logic that something must be alien involves too many assumptions, when there are other answers that don't require such a big leap.
Why is that. Spending on science, absolutely. But why would the possibility of life out in the Universe mean military spending. Cliche alien invasion movies should not cause us to waste money on a scenario that has close to zero chance of happening. And what giant boondoogle would we throw away money on to guard against nonexistent aliens?
We already spend way more than we need to on the military.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
