I'm all in for representation, and anyone who knows me knows that. But this isn't representation; using Ron Troupe, John Henry, Nat Irons, Gangbuster, Maggie Sawyer, Shay Veritas....*that* would be representation. What we have here is taking a secondary character who's just barely important enough to be called "important" and making a superficial change (let's be real, Jim hasn't mattered very much in a long damn time). Now, maybe the characters I just mentioned will show up, I wouldn't be surprised if at least a few of them did. And that'll be great. But they're not being hyped up as part of the core cast.
This almost never happens to the "truly" important characters (sometimes, but not often), just the ones who have stuck around long enough to be quasi-recognizable. And it's usually the ginger redhead, because gingers are the only group where it's still socially acceptable to joke about them and nobody is gonna get pissy about the demographic being removed/changed. This isn't a win for diversity, this is ignoring the incredible PoC who already exist and throwing a thin coating of paint on a white guy.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are times when a little race bending can be a benefit. Lois being half Asian works really well for me; her father's a general and at some point he came home from overseas with a wife and daughter. Cool, that helps play up Lois' background as a army brat and it doesn't change her visual to such a degree that she's unrecognizable. But Jimmy being black is a pretty big shift, and doing that while someone like Ron Troupe remains unused just rubs me the wrong way. It just feels like a lazy attempt to diversify while leaving the actual diverse characters out of the equation. And I'm not even saying they should replace Jim with Ron; use both!
As for Lois being petite, I'm not bothered by it. Lois should be a beautiful woman but that doesn't just mean "porn star curves" either. I didn't think "young male" when I saw her; it's clearly a woman, she's cute (for a drawing), and her personality really comes across in that promo art.
And all this....it's just nitpicking. I am beyond excited that Clark is finally getting a cartoon again, I'm beyond thrilled that it's aimed at kids and an all-ages audience. I might have to wait until the blu-ray for this but it's definitely gonna find its way into my daughter's movie collection.
