I bought this mini a few years back because one issue guest stars the New Mutants but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Hope it's good.

It would be a neat development to bring her back to reveal that the alien rings used to enhance her powers were the source of her mental instability (instead of the old canard 'women shouldn't have great power, lest they go all Dark Phoenix / Wanda Maximoff for not knowing their place'), and that she's just fine without them. (Or with them, after they are re-tuned to no longer make humans who wear them get all bossy.) Maybe even as simple a solution as wearing one of them, and letting Roy wear the other, and them maybe work as a team, could fix the 'going crazy' issue. That such a 'fix' would also bring her (and him) down to a somewhat less cosmic power level could only help with story potential.

That was part of the original story as the villain Zxaxz fell prey to the rings' power as well (and the first six issues discussed whether or not it'd happen to Erica), but it rings hollow with her brother Roy becoming Spellbinder Supreme without issues. Poor Erica She reminds me of Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, but unluckier.
