They seem akin to the MCU Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, where their abilities are derived/unlocked by eposure to a "magic" source: The Universal Wellspring.

Yes, that was my impression also. They're not considered mutants because their genetic mutation originates on magic and not cientific sources (what a bunch of hypocritical bigots those mutants ).

Oh yeah. I was intrigued to learn more about what was up with Snakes, in particular, but also Kelpie (who had a darker edge than I'm used to for a water-character) and the new Union Jack (who made a cool POV character, being the 'normal guy' on the team), and Craig the Cybernetically Enhanced Corgi was too funny.

Yeah. Though we're lucky we got it at all, as it was originally an Empyre tie-in, cancelled due to COVID and retooled for King in Black.

They cameoed in the Marvels #12 last week, for some reason (they were among a group that included the FF, Avengers, Agents of Atlas, plus Spider-Man and Songbird, but since The Union is a UK team and the others are based in the US, it doesn't actually make sense for them to be there).

IIRC, Midnight's Fire and Sil were considered mutants (not sure about the rest of the Folding Circle). But the '90s were along time ago so things may have changed.

I could have been reading that wrong, but it seemed to me like the Universal Wellspring (or Wellspring of Power) could potentially be a (if not the) hidden or secret catalyst for the general manifestation of superpowers in the Marvel Universe, with the Folding Circle more deliberately and consciously tapping into it.

    You're on!

I've always loved a cyborg in Marvel comics. Every iteration of Deathlok, and, since we're talking obscure characters, I still remember being freaked out by Robert Saunders in the ASM Annual #20 - Iron Man 2020 storyline. If I remember correctly it was printed as the back-up story in Transformers UK, even featuring in some of the same issues as Death's Head who would of course later meet Iron Man 2020 himself!
