Default Something I have been wondering about Joker and his alternate back stories

So here's a bit of a odd theory I've had for a while what if Joker was a undercover cop? That would explain a lot of his different back stories and his various skills and talents. My main theory is he was the one good honest cop and genuinely believed in a better Gotham but then because of Gordon and Batman (like there actions could have affected his investigation) his family was put in danger his cover got blown and finally he fell into the chemicals. I just think this really fits him and really adds to why he hates Batman and has tormented Jim Gordon at the same time I like the idea of Jim and Batman's earlier days having unintentional collateral damage.

That could work. If you thicken your plot/idea, you could try proposing that to DC.

I don't see it myself, but as a "multiple choice", maybe it be possibly added to the list. I always think it best never to seek certainty as to the all the "why's" of The Joker. Partly because no one theory could make sense of everything (Golden, Silver, etc), and it all adds up to Joker being capable of being or representing so many different things to different fans and writers.

There's a lot of core stuff about Bruce/Batman that writers just have to keep to in their runs/works, Bruce/Bats is more rigid for writers, but Joker is this wonderful blanker (new word I just created (no, I probably didn't)) slate and we've seen people like Scott Snyder and Grant Morrison and others really take advantage of that lack of clarity regarding Joker and his origin/motivations/sanity/insanity.

For myself, the only thing I allow myself to accept about Joker's origin was that he was the robber known as the Red Hood (who fell into the chemicals) (per Joker creator Bill Finger in Detective Comics #168 (Feb 1951)). I know not how he became the Red Hood or why or what his life was like before then. For me, that's all not known with any certainty per Alan Moore's seminal multiple choice explanation. (hypothetically, I repeat very hypothetically....probably the most acceptable thing I'd be willing to accept with some certainty about Joker's past was that he was a Ace Playing Card Company "lab worker" as Joker claims in Tec #168, but I instead choose to side with Alan's Moore retcon of sorts where it's just Red Hood + rest is unknown/multiple choice)

Things I love: Batman, Superman, AEW, old films, Lovecraft

Grant Morrison: “Adults...struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life. Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real.”

Joker was the original "Matches" Malone, an undercover cop who got caught and thrown into the chemicals by either the gang he infiltrated or by corrupt cops and after coming out of it he has hard time telling between the past he had and the past/lies he told to other people.

It is the beauty of the Joker...you can have this be your headcanon and it wouldnt feel out of place.
Its a neat idea for sure.

While I like Castiel's idea for Mr J's background I now want to know who the other 2 Jokers are. Since there are 3.

Joker should never have a definitive backstory beyond being a guy who fell into vat of chemicals and who may or may not be wearing a red hood when he did it.

So this sparked an idea: based on the fact that the Joker's origin in a 'multiple choice', maybe his present day actions are dictated by whatever backstory he's concocted in his mind. It can be distortions of something that really happened and Batman has to figure out what the Joker is thinking or what his invented backstory is in order to stop him. Maybe one day he is pretending to be a rich heir swindled out of his fortune, may be the next day he is a domestic abuse victim seeking revenge, maybe the next week he is a disgruntled accountant who became a master criminal to escape the monotony of life and he keeps inventing new backstories in order to serve whatever plot he's concocting.
