I feel like Will Smith is a better than average actor, but I believe his best work remains Six Degrees of Separation.

My father wasn't a fan of his work, but he admits that Sylvester Stallone gave a good performance in Cop Land (1997):

Cameron Diaz in "Any Given Sunday" (1999)
Ben Affleck in "Shakespeare in Love" (1998)
Brendan Fraser in "Gods and Monsters" (1995)
Oprah Winfrey in "the Color Purple" (1989)
Jessie Eisenberg in "the Social Network" (2010)
Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball" (2001) (I SAID WHAT I SAID!)
Anna Kendricks in "Up in the Air" (2009)
Joseph Cotton in "the Third Man" (1949)
Kevin Costner in "A Perfect World" (1993)
... and I feel like a bad gay for doing this but... Rock Hudson in "Giant" (1956) (COME ON, he's really not very good)

Woahhhhh! When did Will Smith start getting lumped into 'mediocre' actor territory, he's very skilled, he just makes some bad choices on what roles to accept.

We are Fredrick the Great. We are Rustin. We are Addams. We are Marsha! Marsha Marsha Marsha! We so generous, we DeGeneres. We are Ziggy Stardust hooked to the silver screen. Ben Afleck has been good in several films. His last two, The Accountant and The Way Back were excellent performances.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

I've not seen those two, so maybe he's finally learnt to be very good (but I doubt it). He's not a lead actor to me, he's just not got that presence to carry a film; what he does best is minor roles (such as "Good Will Hunting"). Little bit a comedy and some sass. His work in Argo was, what I would call, serviceable (and even then he was the wrong race). I noticed it most in "Gone Girl". He wasn't 'bad' (I wouldn't say he's a bad actor, merely a mediocre one), but only when you put him next to Rosamond Pike did you realise... ohhhh, that's how you do it. THAT is acting.

Lawrence Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate. He's still stiff and unnatural, but in this context it really works.

To get completely serious for a minute...

    Dazed And Confused

It doesn't seem like it is brilliant acting, but it totally is.
