I do think Spencer has had a bit of an issue focusing on so many subplots driven by other characters that Peter just kind of stumbles into.

It’s a serious issue he has and it’s been going on for some time now. Spider-Man/Peter Parker feels more like a supporting character then the star of the title. Sometimes less is more and Spencer just seems to juggle way too many things at once instead of just sticking with what works. Condense it all and focus on Peter MJ , Kindred, Norman, Mephisto and so on. Basically just focus on that which has the readers interested because the subplots aren’t doing it...
