He’s still dead and likely hasn’t been revived because Sinister grafted his x-gene to himself to make himself a mutant.
Wasn’t John Proudstar, Thunderbird, the original, depicted in the background of the bar scene in HoX/PoX, or X-Men? I don’t remember the issue off hand.
Also, as a reader, I don’t think resurrecting the original John Proudstar for anything is a great idea. He was much more useful as a tragic, cryptically referenced backstory for new readers to go search out and discover, especially so far back in the day before the internet and so many reprints. The 7-11 Slurpy Cup image was so much more useful in that regard than having him around as a character, especially so when his brother showed up.
Cockrum inking his own work is always so much better than what any other inker could do for him.

I daresay that Dave Cockrum was a much better inker than illustrator -- though in the mid 70s, he was equally good at both. I think after he created Futurians, he stopped using brushes to ink -- but I don't know for certain. I don't know that he continued inking at all after the 80s. No matter who he inked -- from Gil Kane to Jim Starlin to Bob Brown (see Avengers 126), he added a richness to the art. I believe his style was based largely on Wally Wood's.
I don't know but I think he should come back. I have been posting scans of him in the emotional and powerful moments thread. I think he still has potential. And Johns death was a big deal to James.
In my head canon, Thunderbird and Sabretooth are the wardens of Krakoa's pits, where all the undesirable mutants go. Their running secrets black ops mission for Xavier and Magneto...suicide squad style.
This team is even deadlier than the Hellions.
Some of us wait, some of us act.
I think there was some confusion about this among writers and editors. He appeared in the first Green Lagoon splash page, but then when JDW was asked about it he said something dumb about Cerebro not being online yet, even though it was, it first appeared in X-Men #7 in 1964 well before Thunderbird's introduction. So that, plus the Sinister thing, has caused writers to assume he isn't available for resurrection. But he should be, I doubt Sinister only had the one genetic sample that he used for himself. Perhaps it will come up in New Mutants, James seems to be thinking about him.
Cerebro would immediately detect the resemblance between him and Sinister. Sinister has agreed to a no-clones rule. He probably fears being caught up in a technicality and is therefore keeping Thunderbird off the list. I am sure it will come up eventually. They did not make a point of mentioning if there were no vague plans in place for Thunderbird.
I think the main issue with Thunderbird is that he looks exactly like Warpath, has the same powers and more or less the same attitude (although he wasn't really established long enough to fully form as a character unfortunately). The Sinister thing is more of an excuse really. Either way, I fully support the return of John Proudstar to the X-Men, possibly looking like this:

I do not know why people keep saying they are the same and just to be quick John was so close to Wolverine that's why they didn't mind killing him despite them supposedly liking him more. I don't think James is like Logan at all. Granted John may be a less irritating version of Logan to some. I mean if they are the same can't this guy even connect with his young bro to see how he turned out and the X-Men that would be interesting right there him being one only about 2 days?
ETA: This actor looks so much like Johnny Depp.
I am so behind in my reading. Pile and piles of books on the shelf. . .. And shouldn't that be a major story point to explore. Warpath finds out. The "Uncanny X-Men" find out. This should create major conflict but all we have gotten in crickets. The most significant X-Man death behind Jean Grey's (Dark Phoenix Saga) and no X-writer has touched the story? It doesn't make any sense in the grand land of resurrections.
