Thanos did not have a obsession or love of Death in the MCU. That was part of Starlin's comics.
In the MCU he wanted to end the overpopulation straining the Universe's resources.
You don't have to know any Comic Book History to follow the MCU, it just adds to the fun.There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

That hand is Thanos standing and the Other bows before him.
