Default Human Target by Tom King and Greg Smallwood

With a resume that includes successful and critically acclaimed titles such as The Omega Men, Mister Miracle, Rorschach, and Strange Adventures, best-selling writer Tom King definitely has the magic touch when it comes to plumbing the depths of the DC Universe and reimagining characters for a new generation of fans. On November 2, King and artist Greg Smallwood create a new legacy for DC’s deadliest bodyguard in Human Target, a 12-issue limited series based on the character co-created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino.

Christopher Chance has made a living out of being a human target—a man hired to disguise himself as his client to invite would-be assassins to attempt his murder. He’s had a remarkable career until his latest case protecting Lex Luthor when things go sideways. An assassination attempt Chance didn’t see coming leaves him vulnerable and left trying to solve his own murder...as he has 12 days to discover just who in the DCU hated Luthor enough to want him dead. The DC Universe meets gritty detective noir in this DC BLACK LABEL series by two of comics most celebrated talents!

That should be a long list.

    Is that...Ice ?

Did one of the JLI kill him and that's their role in the story? Or does that involve why Ice comes into Chance's office asking for his help? Is Ice a Film Noir Heroine now ?

Yeah not even counting Superheroes, imagine literally every supervillain and businessman/woman that Lex Luthor has ever crossed.

    Ice looks good.
    The JLI looks good.
    Chance looks good.
    Makes me miss Darwyn Cooke.
Smallwood's art is a good fit.

I'll be waiting to hear reviews first before reading, though, due to Heroes in Crisis (which is notably absent from the list of King's works listed in the blurb).

The JLI has me interested in this, along with the art. I'll give this one at least an issue, more if King doesn't give the Bwa-Ha-Ha League PTSD because King needs therapy.

A Human Target "Detective Noir..." series is essentially "Just let me know when I show up at the comic shop with the money..."

Everything else about it is just potential frosting on the beaters.

A 12 issue "Detective Noir..." story by Tom King, that means likely an interesting mystery in issue #1, than 10 issues with next to no plot development but extremely unfunny and out of place attempts at humour and a rushed, unsatisfying conclusion that doesn't make much sense in issue #12.

But the art is probably pretty.

Ah Christopher Chance will be the next traumatized victim of Tom King. Unfortunately, not even Christopher Chance will be able to escape this character assassination.

I really don't understand why Tom King keeps getting handed characters he should never have even been in the ball park to write for. Do his series really sell that well (we're not going to count Batman, because I could write Batman and it would still sell like hot cakes)? I liked his Omega Men, but everything else he's done since then has been below average. I haven't read his Rorschach yet, but I'm preparing for a wordy slog with the most bland visual storytelling that DC has to offer. And was Bendis not available to write this story (or literally anyone else)? At least Smallwood's pencils look great.
