In fairness the New Genesis Gods have been portrayed a lot more antagonistically in recent works. They were the main villains of a huge Green Lantern crossover during the New 52 I recall.
Its hardly a Tom King specific issue. Thats more a general issue of the misuse of the New Gods brand.
Just read the Tales Of The Human Target, and while I am slightly upset I didn't catch on to the twist of what all three stories had in common until the big reveal, but the ending really does make you rethink the first half of the series and wonder where the second half is going to go, especially with the implications of her motivations...
Fire grew up poor? Or did King just add that in?

Pretty sure he made that up. In "Checkmate," it was revealed that even though Bea DID do model work, she was actually trained by her father as a spy and there were some pictures of her training as a child in the yard of a mansion. Could she still have "grown up poor" and the house just wasn't theirs? Possibly. But it's more likely, knowing King, that he just didn't do his homework. Or ignored it.
I thought that King might at least put together some entertaining stories in the "Tales of the Human Target," at least something to justify where he was coming from with his series. Instead, it felt really hard to read (with the constant jumping from story to story with no transition) and very odd.
I don't think he really improved on his take of Guy or Booster, and Fire's was just kind of odd. I get what he was going for, but I think he missed the mark with the storytelling aspect. There are better ways to show Fire's loyalty than having her hang out around somebody's dead body.
And Booster is not an idiot... seriously wish he'd stop characterizing him like that. And Guy... well, it seemed that Guy was more or less authentic to his 1980s personality. But it didn't match up with how he acted, really, in King's Human Target series so far. So I'm not sure what to make of it.
Different universe.
