    Films used to be a step up, but now films are a step down.
    Do to the combination of television getting better and films getting worse.

    No it is no longer a step down thanks to streaming services like Netflix. that was a game changer.

    Whilst the demarcation lines are no longer clear, I still say the answer lies in the money. Regardless of whether it releases on stream, cable or big screen, I imagine that the prestige signal of today is how much an actor or director pulls for a given commitment more than the channel through which that commitment reaches the audience.
