Default Is there an ending to COVID?

I was feeling hopeful at the start of the year with the vaccine rollout. But with the pandemic still going on, I'm starting to feel discouraged. It's amazing how in 1918 when the flu epidemic broke out, the medicine wasn't what it is now along with the technology. There was a lot of deaths but we got through it. Now fast forward 100+ years technology and medicines are better and it feels like the medical officials and general public are running around like chickens with their head cut off. Not listening to medical advice, not getting vaxxed. We are 20 months into this pandemic and it feels like there is no end in sight. I long for the days of crowds being at sporting events and concerts. Scenes being filled out in shows/movies. Theaters being full for movies Parks being full with people. Will we get there?

I heard that the 1918 flu became nastier and then broke the contamination chains. It ended like that. I don’t know how long it took.

I think that, despite the anti-vaxxers, more and more people will get vaccinated, and little by little, the virus will have less leverage. Specialists said that 2022 will be the year of improvement.

Eventually, you will just have to patient.

Once the vaccine is administered wide spread in developing countries the chances of new variants popping up will become less and less
(If it did escape from a lab for geo political reasons....we could be f'd though if something new is in the works)

Otherwise, if your vaccinated, you'll be able to safely go to concerts and football games, but you could still catch COVID (most likely from someone who hasn't been vaccinated), but your symptoms won't be as severe, as you will have the antibodies to fight it.

Not if the knuckle-draggers resisting everything we do to try and end it have their way, no.

    1. Get vaccinated. (If you got Pfizer, be ready to get the booster shot when it comes out, as it is being set up to further protect you from variants.)
    2. Tell people you know to get vaccinated.
    3. Mock those who dig in, argue against science and don't for being the selfish twits they are. This thing will hang around in the populace until they get their act together.
    4. Repeat #1-3 as much as you have to until it's over.

In the U.S. we're still going to see a bump in the fall, likely because the vaccine has to be cleared for children under 12, and kids are headed back to school to be in cramped quarters and spread it around. Including the variants.

Watching the local news and saw a graphic that the delta variant is currently responsible for 99 percent of of all COVID deaths and 97 percent of all hospitalizations. Those are damn sobering numbers to say the least. In addition to a fall surge, there's bound to be concern about all the athletes, coaches and other personnel returning from the Olympics in Tokyo where vaccinations have been lacking and cases have already been breaking out among the participants, leading to fears of a possible super spreader event.

    Short answer- yes
Long answer- no, however the effects of Covid will be weaker to the point where it'll just become another cold.

The pandemic has honestly shown me the best and worst in People. The fact that anti-vaxxers seem so sure that it's all one big conspiracy. Even if it is, get vaccinated so you don't kill everyone.
Truth is, as long as 80-90% of people get the vaccine, the population should be fine. But we should reserve that 10-20% for those who are unable to get for medical reasons.
    If you're a hangover, congratulations, you're a dick.

Anyway, the sooner People get vaccinated, the quicker things will return back to relatively normal life. I don't think we can/ want to go back.
People have found themselves far more comfortable working from home as opposed to getting on public transport everyday, which isn't exactly a good thing.
It will hopefully lead to a crackdown on markets where hygiene isn't something to be taken into consideration.
But that's not gonna happen because it'll cost too much money.

Anyway, yes, the pandemic will be over, no Covid won't go away.

It wont as long as we have these dumbass people who refuse to get the shot. NBC News did a story on a guy. Got Covid at the start. Was in the hospital for like 6 months it was bad. But neither he or his wife got the shot because they still claimed it was a hoax Covid isnt a big deal blah blah blah. Now that same guy is back in the hospital with the Delta Strain and on a breathing machine. His wife? Still holds firm this is all being blown out of proportion by Biden and she will be damned if she gives a fake president the satisfaction of getting the shot. Two days later she is on a breathing machine as well.

Well I am sure Trump is proud and sending her family a get well card!
    **** these people.

What about the pandemic brought out the best in anyone? Sure, times of crisis and adversity are also a chance for us to show that as a society we could come together and make the necessary sacrifices to overcome these challenges together, but I feel like even the most pessimistic and nihilistic outlook could not have predicted just how selfish and petty everyone was going to be.

I mean, just the entire premise to this thread is absurd. Things will go back to normal once the virus is eradicated, full stop. If, as it looks increasingly likely now, that it will just be a recurring feature that will never completely go away, then life can never go back to the way it was before the pandemic. Who cares whether or not you can go to the movies or baseball games when people are dying? It's not even as if these public gatherings we yearn for are actually accomplishing anything meaningful, people are just yearning for the freedom to consume again, and come on that's pathetic.

People like interacting with others. Who knew?

And while it shouldn't be prioritized over public health and safety, I see nothing wrong with people wanting to enjoy the events and gatherings they used to participate in before Covid. Sometimes, it's okay for people to just have fun (as long as it isn't hurting anyone else).

I like what Macron is doing, and he gave a great speech to sell it. It's basically a small change: You will need either a vaccination or a fresh test result to participate in all kinds of parts of life (restaurants, travel, theaters etc), but ... the tests will no longer be free. 29 bucks for a test if you want to go for a coffee (which can already cost € 7,- in Paris). Or get the vaccine, which is free. Macron asked: "Why should we who did our civic duty and get vaccinated have to stay home to protect our children? Let those stay home who refuse to get vaccinated."

There are now voices here in Germany asking for the same. I think it might be the only way to end covid.

People enjoy being social creatures. Baseball games, football games, coffee shops, movies and lunch with friends those are all things people enjoy. There is nothing wrong with wanting to get back to that. or go to a store and buy something nice and fun.

I imagine people who bitch about other people wanting to go to movies and shopping are very sad in their empty house where they do nothing because they could not lower themselves to consumerism by purchasing a tv, video game, or laptop or smartphone (yet some how have access to an internet web page about comics to tell us all how pathetic we are). And man never going out to eat or to lunch or a movie because that too is pathetic.

I dont care about going out. I rarely do. But there is nothing wrong with people wanting to get back to normal and are pissed that there are dumbass people that actively are making that harder by not doing something as simple as getting a hot just to stick it to the damn libs.

You dont want to go to a baseball game or movie right now because you think its dumb? Great stay home. But dont get insulting towards someone else because they want to go out and have a good time after over a year of lock downs.

    Short answer: no.
Long answer: no, but it will get better. It will evolve, adapt, and life will sooner or later get back to a state of normality it once was, but this is a long way off. 2022 at the earliest.

This is a terrible suggestion! Sorry, absolutely not! I can't stand anti-vaxxers, but let's face reality: we want as many to change their minds, or NOT change their minds but still get the vaccine. Here's how you don't get people to change their minds: mock them, to p*ss them off, so they dig their heels in even more.

Seriously, this is a horrible idea! Rational discussion and facts will help change more minds than mockery and shame. Not all, but maybe enough to swing the balance. Please, PLEASE don't make people dig their heels in more. Be better than pettiness.

Yeah and if people had just understood that we had to make sacrifices to eradicate the virus, we could have contained it much sooner and we'd all have been back to living normally long ago. Socializing is fun, but people need to get their priorities straight, because the nature of the virus means that gathering in public DOES hurt plenty of other people. Complaining that measures put in place to stop a deadly pandemic are getting in the way of you social life is not an attitude that we should tolerate from adults.

The countries that have successful contained the virus never entertained the idea that there was kind of balance to strike between saving lives and the economy, and surprise surprise, they are doing much better on BOTH fronts than countries that have spent the entire pandemic debating this rather than implementing effective countermeasures.

People were already bitching about lockdown fatigue barely a month in, which of course led to the rushed re-opening schedules that ended up prolonging the pandemic for far longer than it had to go on. Sure, everybody wants to enjoy life, but here in America we've made leisure such a central part of our identity that we apparently can't suffer any hardship for even the briefest moments without throwing a huge temper tantrum and making things worse for everyone in the process. Life sucks sometimes, if you have to stay home by yourself to keep people from dying you do it, the fact that we're even having a discussion about this is frankly embarrassing.

To answer the OP, it might be instructive to look at say polio. After Salk and then Sabin developed their vaccines, and deployed them, (with Sabin's being the big savior---because it worked better and was oral, meaning anyone could take it without special training), it still took decades before most of the developed world had herd immunity. The developing world still sees cases to this day. But if you look at this case, it was sort of possible to beat these things, but it can take a long while, and it seems more likely to force Covid into being a minor irritant rather than the major killer it still is today in places.

However, if you want optimism, there is some reason for it. While the Delta variant seems to be much more infectious than the OG blend, it seems to burn itself out rather quickly, which is logical when you think about it; it infects at such a rapid pace that it soon burns out of it's ready made victim population as more and more people acquire natural immunity. That's what seems to be happening in countries like India, which of course has a third world medical system and third world distribution, it hit hard, very hard initially, but deaths and new cases seems to be hitting a steep drop. And with the exception of their vaccination program, which is terrible and has been since they bet early and wrong on the AZ vaccine. To read th news accounts, Australia is in a major pandemic crisis. But when you look at the numbers, they have hardly any deaths, and few hospitalizations. On the flip side of course, most of them are unvaccinated, and haven't gotten the thing naturally, so they have no inherent immunity and are vulnerable.

The difference between them and India comes down to two things it seems. The first is obvious. A first world medical system, along with first world infrastructure is better than the third world equivalent. The other is lockdowns. Australia has been serious with those, and India...wasn't. But you can't sustain those forever. So it's a mixed bag I'm afraid.
