Deke! Agents of Shield.
Deke! Agents of Shield.
Spike joining "Angel" after "Buffy" ended worked out great. Those two always had such great chemistry and Spike could be the "Cordelia" of the group (the person in the group who's just outside the group enough to have an emotional detachment and say funny insensitive things to break the tension) after Cordelia stopped being the Cordelia.

Past that...
There are often pretty interesting "Here Today..."/"Gone Later Today..." characters that are solid, but I get the feeling that those characters were not exactly what the OP was talking about.
Castiel in Supernatural.
Mr Furley on Three's Company
Chachi on Happy Days
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:
Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.
Bones did the rotating interns, which I thought actually worked for the show.

Kelly/Erin on "The Office" ended up working well. I don't think she was meant to be anything special when she was first added (unlike James Spader, who was a splashy hire), but she just melted in naturally with the rest of the cast and found her way in.
Jack on Supernatural comes to mind.
He was only there seasons 12-15, but he def. became part of the family.
Rich Dotcom on Blindspot.
He was introduced in S1, appeared again in S2, and became a regular in S3. He had good chemistry w. everyone/great chemistry w. Patterson, and often provided an only sane man perspective to all the ridiculous plot lines which was great.
