Default Batman: One Dark Knight by Jock

This December, three time New York Times best-selling artist Jock (The Batman Who Laughs, Batman: The Black Mirror) brings his signature style to the blacked-out streets of Gotham City in Batman: One Dark Knight, a three issue, prestige format mini-series from DC Black Label. Written and drawn by Jock, the miniseries will debut in print and on participating digital platforms on Tuesday December 7, 2021.

“I think most readers know how much I love drawing Batman, so I was thrilled by the prospect of marrying the visual take with my own storyline for Batman: One Dark Knight,” said Jock. “I wanted to tell a propulsive, tight action tale, set over one typical night in Gotham City; except when a blackout strikes it’s a night that goes very, very wrong for Batman. I can’t wait to share more with everyone soon!"

When a simple GCPD escort goes sideways, Batman finds himself on the wrong end of Gotham City in the middle of a heat wave with a super-villain in tow. Follow Batman as he traverses block by block across a pitch dark Gotham City while dragging a highly difficult E.M.P. to his permanent home at Blackgate Prison. The dark corners of Gotham City contain many surprises…and E.M.P. plans to deliver many more shocks before the night is through!

I'll buy it for Jock's art alone. Not sure if I've ever read anything he's actually written.
"Has Sariel summoned you here, Azrael? Have you come to witness the miracle of your brethren arriving on Earth?"

"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"

"*sigh* I hoped it was for the miracle."

Dan Watters' Azrael was incredible, a constant delight and perhaps too good for this world (but not the Forth). For the love of St. Dumas, DC, give us more!!!

There are only so many Batman stories one can tell, at this point it's all about the execution.

As much as we really don't need this. The premise actually sounds pretty cool.
It's the Dynamic Duo! Batman and Robin!... and Red Robin and Red Hood and Nightwing and Batwoman and Batgirl and Orphan and Spoiler and Bluebird and Lark and Gotham Girl and Talon and Batwing and Huntress and Azreal and Flamebird and Batcow?

Since when could just anybody do what we trained to do? It makes it all dumb instead of special. Like it doesn't matter anymore.

Since the current in continuity batman stories are trash (detective is decent) these little mini series have been a godsend and keep me going. I think it's funny how much whining new batman books get on the d.c. Board because I don't think they get it. They only see d.c. Trying to push batman because he sells, which is of course true. What they don't see is batman is the most flexible of the d.c. Characters because of the mythology and the world of gotham. So when the main book is trash, like it currently is, there is opportunity to keep readers who's favourite character is batman (without the servents) happy and engaged.

Sounds ok, but nothing groundbreaking. Art will probably be good though.

Other characters are flexible too and have fans that would like to have options. At least more chances than they get. It's a chicken or the egg scenario.

Batman warrants a lot of content because he sells, but DC getting to the point where they have to rely almost exclusively on Bat-related stuff to appeal to an increasingly niche audience to pay the bills is probably a sign that they fucked up things somewhere along the line.

I don't see the need for it to be a Black Label book. It just feels like an arc for Detective Comics.

Surprising amount of blue in the Batsuit.

That feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Batman is the most flexible DC character because he's the one with the most writers/miniseries going around.

None of these Black Label books have showcased Batman’s supposed “flexibility” though. It’s not like we’re getting Brave & the Bold lighter Batman stories alongside gritty and dark ones. They’re all pretty much playing into one tone of “what’s the darkest Batman story I can come up with?”.

It’s not Batman’s flexibility they’re taking advantage of, it’s his popularity. These Batman books are funding the losses elsewhere in the line. And as long as this means we get more stuff like the Green Arrow/Aquaman team up, I’m a-ok with more Batbooks.

Yes, some lighter Batman stuff would be nice to vary it up. Otherwise it seems to be an endless parade of Batman, Joker and Harley stuff. Been there, done that.

At least Reptilian has Sharp's artwork though, so that one at least is really standing out from the pack.
