    Default IDW's Marvel Action: Spider-Man (2021) #4

    955765._SX1280_QL80_TTD_.jpg

This issue was an interesting take on Screwball's character. The previous issue and Variant cover for this issue made Sammie (Screwball) appear that she would be similar to her 616 and PS4 game counterpart, but here she was actually more heroic. She was trying to scare Otto into canceling a research group called the Junior Research Squad that would experiment on students and she actually helped Spider-Man in the end. This is another concept the comic "borrowed" from the 2017 cartoon. Screwball shows Spider-Man a secret room under the school with four chairs that the Research Squad members are supposed to sit in. This is basically what happened to Miles, Gwen, and Anya in Between an Ock and a Hard Place.

Later on, we see Otto looking over schematics for his metal tentacles and declaring that with the science fair coming up that it would be a great time to finish of Spider-Man.

Other things from this issue include Carlie blaming Spider-Man for her broken leg from the battle with Mysterio last issue, it looks like Betty Brant was changed into an Asian woman with the last name "Brandt", Carlie was recruited into the Junior Research Squad, and twice throughout the book, there was a background character with a design similar to Gwen's from the 2017 cartoon (hair bun) who is also a part of the Junior Research Squad.

Also, the artwork was great throughout the entire issue this time. The facial expressions weren't exaggerated too much.

    That's also an...interesting take on Screwball's costume.

Kinda weak that Screwball is a heroic figure. Spider-Man already lacks female antagonists as it is. At least the subplot with Otto seems to be ramping up.

This kind of reminds me of Screwball in the Marvel's Spider-Man episode where she interrupts and steals from a public ceremony and assaults Robbie...but is seemingly not arrested at the end because she's learned her lesson and is actually one of Peter Parker's friends (who never really does anything after that episode) .

Well as Screwball she was more heroic. In her civilian identity, she's basically canon Screwball and another of Peter's bullies like Flash.

curious. I guess she'll show up in cartoons (if she hasn't already?)

In the Spider-Man cartoon a few years ago, she did appear. Since her secret identity hasn't been revealed in the comics, the show gave the identity to Liz Allen.

The Marvel Action line has been cancelled, IDW's had it's Marvel license revoked!
