I found it... Jersey Devil is referenced in 1953's Beyond the Fences.

A full story with the Jersey Devil would be nice though...

Also, just FYI, this BTF story has several panels with Hellboy with feet (and not hooves), curious how the artist made the mistake.

The story is set in 1953, back when Hellboy would force his hooved feet into regular shoes to try and fit in. He stops doing this in 1955.

I see. I just checked 1954 and he had them in there too as you said, but he actually has them (shoes) taken off in the Black Son, once captured, where you can see his hooves.
