I'm not disliking Philipps work, but man, I don't know why, I don't like Mike Hawkthorne style. Not for me
I've seen and own enough Superman vs Lois Lane covers not to get riled up, but if someone didn't tell me that was Diana, I wouldn't have guessed.
I think it's the combo of not being used to her with that pronounced of a nose bridge, the hairstyle, outfit and colors. She just looks like a generic Amazon to some degree.
I am not trying to disrespect the artist since I couldn't in my life draw as well as this, but that is one ugly Wonder Woman.
She is supposed to have the beauty of Aphrodite, or at least look like one of the most beautiful women the general public has seen, right? They didn't retcon something like that out, yet?
Well, with all due respect, he's drawing her with a phenotype closer to where she comes from in the world than what we see traditionally which is, effectively, a WASP.
The Amazons are diverse, so it's fine, but he gave her an ethnically Mediterranean face. I understand the reasoning, even if I agree she doesn't look like Diana, but the reasoning itself is sound and it's executed well.
You don't have to find that phenotype attractive, but you are kind of coming across as saying "Greek people shouldn't look too Greek."
I'm Greek. I don't have strong Greek features, but I have family that do and it's a bit concerning that you're essentially saying the Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, can only look Anglo-Saxon else she's ugly. She's normally portrayed as someone more likely from England than Greece, I get that, but that's a result of Hollywood white washing casting all the Greek gods as Brits for nearly a century. Come on, dude.
Yes, though like Fish said just about all the iconography has also been removed (bracelets, tiara, lasso, W/Eagle symbol) plus it's kind of rare to Diana in action with heir braided back.
I don't mind the costume though, save for the gold on the inner thighs. Never really considered it before this year but black + gold looks good on her.
As many have said before, Diana is not greek, even though her pantheon is greek. And if you are saying that all Greeks look exactly like how the artist draws them, then I think you are probably stereotyping more than I can.
I commented that this particular artist has drawn Diana ugly. It is my opinion and only mine. And I have googled, for your benefit more than mine, that there are plenty of beautiful greek women that don't look like what the artist has drawn. In fact, when Gal Gadot was cast, many commented that she had that mediterranean look to her, and I doubt most people find her unattractive.
So sue me if most artists have a different conception of what Diana should look like versus the region she came from and what she has to look like. I never implied Greek from my comments, only what you took from them. If a person can't comment on the art without getting personal like you did, then why have a messageboard with opinions?
Thanks for Greeksplaining to me, a Greek man. lol
We don't all look the same, as I noted I don't have many ethnically Greek features, but you attributed ugliness to what traditionally are. In my own family we run the range of looking very WASP comparatively to very ethnically Mediterranean.
I draw umbridge with "how dare that woman have ethnically Mediterranean features, she's supposed to be beautiful like Aphrodite!"
Also, hey. Thanks for bringing up Gal, who they cast because she's nebulously light brown with a foreign accent. She's lovely and she's a good Diana, but to most people here, brown and accent is enough. That's why Antonio Banderas can be cast as a Greek man in 2021 and nobody cares.
Your direct comparison to Aphrodite is my problem. You bring up the Greek goddess of beauty and pretty much shit on the notion she actually have Greek features, implying she needs to look like the traditionally blonde, fair skinned Hollywood portrayal that is the result primarily of white washing in adaptions where beauty is presented as pale skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. Nearly every American adaptation of Aphrodite and Helen of Troy follows that model because they're trying to impart that it's more beautiful. I in no way insinuated all Greek women look alike, but nice try putting those words in my mouth.
Yeah, she isn't Greek, but I'm speaking of Aphrodite who explicitly is, yet she's always whitewashed. Moreover, I addressed that Diana is usually portrayed as
In the artist's words
I understand that everyone has different tastes, but talking about beauty as an established canon in 2021 is weird, cringe or whatever word suits.I'm trying to rethink what Diana looks like, looking to ancient Greece for inspiration
It is like those who are horrified by an oversize Aphrodite in Historia.
By the way for me Helen of Troy is Irene Papas in The Trojan Women, who could also be a perfect Aphrodite.
You do realize that when people say the 'beauty of Aphrodite' that they are not necessarily speaking of some real life Aphrodite since their is none in existence. If my interpretation of what beauty of Aphrodite is as compared to yours is different, than so be it. Thanks for mansplaining how I need to interpret that phrase.
