Default DC Comics Coming To Webtoon

Variety: DC Characters Are Coming to Webcomics Through Deal With Webtoon
DC Universe superheroes will be featured in several upcoming webcomics series, through a new deal between WarnerMedia’s DC Entertainment and Webtoon.

Under the agreement, DC and Webtoon, owned by South Korean internet company Naver, will collaborate on standalone webcomics that “will appeal to all fans, without the need to know or read any previous stories,” according to the companies.

For now, however, DC and Webtoon aren’t divulging any details about the projects emerging from the stable of DC superheroes, which include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman. The companies plan to announce more in the next few weeks. The DC webcomics will first be available in English, followed by other language translations.
Webtoon, a pioneer in the distribution of web-based comics, says it has an average of 72 million monthly active users (about 10 million of which are in the U.S.). Its webcomics are available in the free-to-download Webtoon app for Android and iOS. The titles come from all over the world and span genres including romance, thriller, fantasy and comedy. Webtoon first launched in the U.S. in 2014.

Webtoon takes “well-known [intellectual property] like DC’s to develop into content for younger generations,” Webtoon U.S. CEO Ken Kim said, emphasizing the platform’s audience skews toward users 16-24. “It is going to be beneficial for DC and Webtoon.”

Webtoon’s webcomics typically comprise 50-60 episodes per season, and each episode normally is 50-70 panels presented in a vertical-scroll format. The app’s standard release model provides 1-3 free episodes, with 3-5 paid episodes behind the paywall (available for about 50 cents each), with more free content released on a weekly basis.

This is a good move by DC, has the potential to greatly increase their digital audience - just need to see if they can execute it effectively.

Kinda consider since many high profile writers have move to "Substack". Of course, DC know they are gonna to lose more talent and creative team so they decide to launch its own streaming toons.

Would argue that it's already shifted and this is them playing catch up.

This will be interesting. Imagine webtoon making an office romance webcomic but with Lois and Clark. Or a thriller like Bastard but with Slade and Rose Wilson.

Hope they use newer characters too instead of just alternate versions of existing dc characters.

I meant the more classic American Comics market. It's telling that the news of a more offensive Comixology Originals line, Substack getting into comics, and DC teaming up with Webtoon are breaking at roughly the same time.

Webtoons are pretty big now so I'm curious to see what comes with it and what kind of character content it leads to.

Great deal for DC. Webtoon is pretty popular and hopefully we can see good things from new creators on that plataform.
DC: Dick Grayson, Wally West, Donna Troy, Yara Flor, Titans

Some of my favorite Mangas: One Piece, Slam Dunk, Fullmetal Alchemist, HunterXHunter, Vinland Saga, Monster, Berserk, Vagabond.
Current reading: Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Spy X Family, Kaiju Nº8, Blue Lock, Dandadan.

Sounds great to me! Hopefully lesser known characters will also get content made for them, not just the big names.

Official Batman webtoon while official BTAS OST playing in the background. Other characters too. Do it.

That works for the Trinity, who all have multiple movie and TV theme tunes. Flash would probably be able to use his Arrowverse theme, as could Green Arrow. Aquaman would use movie OST, Green Lantern has both a movie and cartoon to draw from. But what about the lesser known characters, who don't have solo cartoons, live action TV shows, or movies? For example, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman.

Idk. I learned not to get excited for DC books anymore b/c it'll most likely just be Batman.

Well, probably likely at least one of them will be Bat-centric...
